Title: Rear Axle Seals
Post by: KFH on March 28, 2010, 07:53:31 PM
Can anybody give me the seal diameters for the axle seals for a standard diff.  I have one weeping slightly so I'll change both however the jaws on my calipers do not have sufficient length to measure the OD.  The original seal is quite thick where it seals on the axle.  I assume that replacement seals are now thinner where they meet the axle.  Any advice will be appreciated.

I just replaced both rear axle bearings and seals and found them very easy to replace. I don't know the size because mine came in the bearing kit but if you go to Bursons, or somewhere like that, and ask for a rear axle bearing kit, then open the box and get the number off the seal. The original axle seal was a leather one and as the leather has no memory ie; doesn't shrink back once stretch, then once worn they won't shrink onto the axle enough to make the seal.
I found that the best method to get the old seal out was to use a slide hammer to knock it out then, to put the new one in i used a short piece of pipe nearly the same diameter as the seal. Be sure to put some rubber grease on the seal before replacing the axle.

Thanks Scotty for the heads up.  I was given one from an old diff today so I now know the OD.  I can get the ID from the axle.  I'll try one of the motor places failing that the bearing places will have the correct one.  Today they couldn't do a cross reference of the number on the old seal I had but if I find the Holden number on the existing seal I have they will probably have a cross reference.  All will be good one way or the other.

Keith think the GMH part number is 7409877 also I have written down next to it V513780 can't remember writting it down but was more that 25 years ago think it must have been a cross reference when I could not get an original seal   ??? ??? ??? the guy at the bearing shop may make some sense of the numbers .......FC427.....

Hi Keith,

The last seals I purchased from CBC were TC12064 @$5.40 each June 2009.

Hope this can help.

Cheers

Hi John.  The part number is still the same.  The price is now around $14 ea at CBC which is allegedly trade price.  When I mentioned your price they went into a huddle and came back with $11.50 ea.  Thanks
