Title: Door Springs Wanted
Post by: Ol_Girl_58 on March 06, 2010, 10:43:45 PM
Hi all,

I am in need of the front left and right hand door springs for my FC. I am unsure how to describe them better than this - when the doors are open, the springs stop the doors from closing.

Any leads appreciated.  :)

Kind regards,

Josh

Josh

There's a bit of a discussion here  http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,14399.0.html ($2)

The contact person is now Steve Evers, not Jim

I bought some of these springs but an mot really happy with the effectiveness of them - they are not quite the right shape.  They needed to be squashed a bit as they bend was too high, but they also need more of a kink to hold the doors open, and probably a bit more of an upward angle.  The problem was, I believe, that the guy who made them up never actually saw them in place and doing what they were supposed to do.

Next time I have the doors off (long time in the future, I hope) I'll try to source some old hinges from somewhere and salvage whatever genuine springs I can find, then rivet them in.  Each front door needs 2 springs (upper and lower) on one hinge per door. From what I've seen there is usually only one spring broken on most doors.  That might mean the remaining one is a bit fragile, but at least it will work for a while.  In addition, the top hinge is usually worn where the spring contacts it.  Swap it with the lower hinge so the springs have full width metal to "grab".

The best source of springs is HR - They are rarely broken (must use better quality steel) and are identical to FE FC.

Thanks Ken, Martin and Leon.

My car doesn't have any springs that I can fabricate, unfortunately.

I'll keep an eye out. But for now, does anyone have a set of these springs, or at least a front left and right and a rear left and right, that I can use as a template to fabricate a set?

Kind regards,

Thanks Ken,

I might take a trip to U-Pull-It after the Nats.  Are HD the same?
