Title: Another Use for the Grey Motor
Post by: KFH on February 27, 2010, 11:44:33 PM
This home made mower is a mechanical nightmare.  The radiator is at the back of the machine.  The gearbox chain drives to a shortened tailshaft to a Holedn diff at the back wheels.  The cutter head is driven from a double pulley on the front of the engine, belt driven up to another shorten tail shaft, diff down to cutter head.  The "mower" sold for $60 at auction. Most of the mechanicals are early Holden.

I'm with Zulu on this one, how great is that. I am sure that if I was at the auction I wouldn't have walked away from it

Explaining it to the wife may have been much more difficult.......

That's so cool! I hope you bought it. I love the way they got drive to the front wheels!

I used to work on the water supply around Wagga, Junee & Coota. Aroud the early 80's. On the Junee-Coota road near Junee there was a grey motor water pump still working near the side of the road. From memory it was uncovered. I asked the fitter at the time what gives, it pumped water I think to a farm on the eastern side of the road. It ran at full speed all the time. Poor thing. I doubt whether it'd be there now.

Colin.

Hi all.  No I didn't but it as I would have had trouble explaining it to the wife when I brought it home.  I agree it is a classic.

Forgiveness is much easier to achieve than permission.  ;D

Hi Keith,
I was at the same clearing sale and was tempted.  Would have meant another 800 km round trip to get it home as I was travelling in a station wagon with no trailer.  Pity I didn't know who you were to say Gday!

Impressive piece of machinary.  Looks like a bit of a death trap though.  Hope your health insurance is valid.  Just might need it.

You'll be able to cut the lawns at 50mph.  :-\
