Well after being a member of this forum for more than a year and recently becoming a member of the Qld Club I thought it was about time I did a serious post. I purchased a 1959 FC Ute in March 2008. The car is the same age as me. Probably paid too much but I think as the saying goes its worth what someone else is prepared to pay and at the time I thought I got a bargain. Over time I have made some decisions about what the rebuild will look like and includes - HR Front end with Torana front rack, Commodore dics allround, Commodore Diff (shortened), Celica Five speed inc enlarged tunnel, keeping grey motor with twin carbies, petronix "points", SBC alternator & Fuel Pump, 80l Commodore fuel tank, Jag Leather buckets seats. Have purchased all of these parts. Up until Christmas 2009 and following a serious accident, I have been dutifully scouring magazines and this site for inspiration. I was able to begin the restoration in earnest at Christmas.

Not sure how often i will be able to post, but hope you will enjoy my Ute restoration as much as I have enjoyed reading about everyone elses. I am hoping to finish before I am 55, but as everyone knows that will be determined by the almighty $.

Hi Wayne and welcome to your first "serious" post!  ;) :D

John and I have had a great time checking out your post so far and we look forward to seeing more from you.  I must say, you look pretty stoked in that shot with your plates! Little things like a nice fresh set of plates (especially something special like those) are a good incentive to keep you going until you can finally hang them on the car for it's first drive.

Obviously you and your dad (and hopefully your son too) are gonna have a ball working on your ute!  Keep up the work and keep posting.

BTW -  I don't think yours is the only bench top that looks like that every now and then!  ;D

Love your post! Being able to have a bit of history with a car is always good. Fantastic that the three of you are able to work on the car together. As far as the tools are concerned, my garage always looks like that :-[ There just never seems to be enough room for everything to go away neatly, or enough time to pack everything away.

I don't know if you have ever been looking for a tool, and then start to have a tidy up, find the tool that you are looking for, and then get stuck back into the job, only to find that when you have finished the whole area is messier than before? It happens like that on most days for me. :-\

Great score with the plates, they will certainly give you a lot of inspiration to have the job finished ;)

Excellent first 'serious' post. I like how you've documented your moves so far - it will make an interesting read once you're done.

Like others have posted, I like the photo of three generations working on the ute.

Yes Dean I saw the monaro and I thought a corvette or something similar and a number of early holdens as well. Talk about shed envy, Deano certainly had the sheds for it. Nice guy and I hope to report back to him that the project is finished.

Not much of an update. I guess like many before me those 4 bolts on the "Y" frames are not your best mates are they? Total of 5 hours and still have one to go. The one into the sill. Looks like next week end now before the front half is removed.

With the rain we are having in South East Qld it is very difficult to see under the car at the moment with glasses on. I guess this is a sun shower compared to our brothers in Nth Qld and Darwin. Don't know how they tolerate the moisture in the air. Perhaps more alcohol. ;D

Anyway hope to have a photo of 2 halves next week.

Well the 2 halves took 4 weeks, not 1 as originally thought. Whilst not in the engineering class of others I am still pretty happy getting this far.

Great to see the progress pics and to see the project coming along nicely.

Great project wayne, Only one problem though, I thought I was reading my own post because your shed looks exactly like mine, Same bench covered in tools, Same concrete covered in oil & dirt & same size shed never ever enough room.Can't wait to see more Pics. Keep up the good work,  Steve (FCV8VAN)

In case you haven't thought about it, seats with inbuilt belts will need some extra bracing at the mounts, if the worst should happen, they now have to cope with the weight of the seat and the occupant being flung around.

You have a gem of a subframe-plenty of others are gunna hate you!

Keep at the project looks to be a good base to start with.

How weird is that normally the floor pans are gone before spring and shock mounts ???

i think of my wifes old man who did up a customline in 1980 and a 29 chev at around mid 80's. when he did the 29 chev, it was about the same age then as our fe's etc now and the customline in 1980 was no nearly as old! so we must expect what we see, time is getting on and these are very old cars now!

The rust in the front spring hanger seem consistant with a lot of Utes I have seen,, sedans don;t seem to suffer rust in this spot so donor panels are easy to get ......FC427.....

The rust doesn't really bother me. Just may take a bit longer. Could be worse. The Wagon on at the moment is a case in point.

I think you will have a fair amount of work around the shock mounts but they were pretty flogged out by the look of them and floor section but i have seen a lot worse.

Well of to the Sandblaster this week and returned today. No new rust and all solvable.

All in the eyes of the beholder but she sure is looking the part dressed in undercoat black. Cannot wait for the final colour. The next steps are offcourse the serious ones.

I have just about settled on a colour Scheme. It was chosen on the basis that the colour was available  on or about my utes 50th. I think time for an upgrade. The trim will be a dark blue .

Wayne I am not going stock. Keeping the engine at this stage. Celica box is in the shed. Buckets seats etc. Excluding buckets seats trying to maintain the look and feel.

Is your front end and diff to be changed out??

Yes. HR Front with Commodore Brakes and Shortened rear Commodore Diff. All in the shed.

Nice work Wayne,they look great when they come back from the sand blasters until you get up close...I believe it's the only way to go (next to dipping of course).Makes the rust more obvious but at least then you know what your dealing with. ;)

i cant wait to get mine to the blaster, but its a long way to go to e decent one. does anyone know of any good ones in ballarat?

Jumped about 400 steps today. Had an opportunity to get the radiator repaired. Had old tank removed and a new tank refitted as well as a 16" Spal thermo fan and  custom built shroud along with a small hot rod Air Condensor. Had already purchased the Electric water pump.

No real update except to say have been working away in the background. As everyone knows it is about money. I expect a significant update in a month or so. Still have the enthusiasm to continue.

I was at a swap meet at Caboolture a couple of weeks ago and came across the following.  The seller said it came out of his HR Holden but did not know origin. There are no discernible markings. Does anyone know? It is a beautiful thing with bakelite switches and pivoting globes. Will need a new alloy base machined up at at some stage, the bodgy timber one is gone.............

Its overhead twin lights. Like in a plane.

Does the egg poacher have a NASCO part number !!!!!!!!!

Mate im sure the ute is going to fly when its done but the plane lights might be overdoing it lol

I reckon those lights came out of an HR panelvan
and were probably removed at the same time as the studded diamond patterned crushed velvet interior, and mini cocktail bar  8)

The lights along with an overhead foxtail should give me an extra 10mph.  ;D

I had an HR van back in the mid seventies and given the work that "workbench" used to get I don't think the egg poacher would have been much use for what we were doing but I know the curtains the G/F's mother made sure were handy, lol.
 
Lots of great memories went with that old van !!!

It has been a while since the last post. Not much physical progress but have been busy getting little bit and pieces done.

Decided I wanted to get a blacksmith to fabricate the strengthener through the tailshaft. Great bloke and did a great job. Had the steel lying in the back so basically pretty cheap.

Had a few parts powdercoated. Still not sure on the blue. But they do look great after some special care. The rear blind and the sunvisor look like new. For 50 year old pieces I was happy they were able to be saved.

Now for the really pretty stuff. Decided to get the side plate ceramic coated along with a few other bits and pieces and I think they have come up a treat. The scuff plates are sensational for a 50 year piece of gear.

Some small changes. As you can see got the rear mounted rack back from Rods Racks. All good. He completed on time. It does look a treat.

The rack is a commodore manual rack with the 911 part number. Bought the Steering arms (the shorter ones) from a HQ and Rod shapes those as well. The Universal is also slightly honed to maximise the turning circle. He also did a collapsible steering column. Not in the shot. I think the price is reasonable.

Will keep updated on progress.

Love the speaker housings they look like a groath on the front of the car. ;D i will probablly do the same good spot to hide them.

Are you gunna go the telly under the car like they did on pimp my ride? Would be a good place to hide from the missus with a tinnie in hand and a good creeper board!  :D Great ideas, thanks for sharing. Should be a comfortable cruiser with all those goodies.

The bloke doing the welding calls the growth's -  boobs. Not sure how they will go acoustically but that does not bother me. Used to cacklin tapes so any improvement on that is fine.

Wayne, I've done the same with mine, I have been told that if I spray stone guard or similar inside the pod, it will help contain the sound. Another bloke told me to use dyna mat or similar sound deadening matting.

Yep, left the original holes and positioned them low mine are FB units which have a long rubber tube so I can run the speaker wires through them. How did you go with the spare wheel door or have'nt you got that far?

Had to enlarge the hole through the firewall by about 5mm. It was easier getting at it with no engine bay. The round file got a workout. Anyway I'm pretty happy with the result.

Also i used a 90 degree fitting and braided line from the local parts joint as its a very tight bend in pipe.

A couple of photo's of the trial fit of the HR Front End. This took 3 years to get all the bits including the HR Front end in OCT 2008 for $50, VP Commodore Dis Brakes and a disc brake stub axel kit for the conversion. Fully rebuilt, very happy with the result.

No issues with tyre Clearance. They are Commodore rims with 195/50 15" tyres.

Anyway getting closer to the cigar. Perhaps in a couple of months (better not jinx myself). Engine next and fuel tank getting finished as we speak. The issue is still getting exhaust past the 80 litre commodore fuel tank when installed. Will work out when in place.

The blue is a bit jap car looking for my liking not classic. You are making me want to pull my finger out. Having 2 cars on the go sorta sucks cos I'm currently building the standard front end with all new parts for the taxi and rear end but doing the same for the Fe custom with shortened co LSD v8 diff and modifying the hrt front end. But the standard front was way more exy than the hr. It's good talking with blokes who understand how much work goes into each update.

Deano, I agree the blue is not staying. I cant believe how you find the time to do 2 cars at once!!!

My wife is already worried that I will spend more time in the house when this one is finished.

Anyway nice problem to have at least the car will be done.

Nick the steering wheel is a bit of trickery. I could not afford the $1200 quoted for the Pearl steering wheel so this is my Steering wheel shorted by a couple of inches and painted. It looks great and I saved $1200.

I also had an aluminium Glovebox made as I was not convinced I had enough room for hoses and the aircon under the dash. If I need to take a notch out of the glovebox to make the unit fit better I can. Also I might want to anchor the AC unit to the glovebox or the hose to the vent on the side could be secured to the glovebox if needed.

Previous posts show the new central dash(old radio) with the air vents and air vents on both sides of the dash.
The demister will be hooked up to the existing  fibreglass demister vents. Will post some photo's next week on how the unit itself fits up there. Hope this helps those who might want to use Vintage.

Craig I will be running the original. It is getting a complete rebuild as we speak.

I went in to buy maroon paint but none left. Could not buy for love nor money. They were giving away the sky blue for nothing so I thought I would take up the offer while the going was good. ;D

So the aircon and alternator are in. Started with a template and because I have an electric waterpump so my mechanical pump has been neutered and used that as the hold down points. Used 5mm stainless steel for the bracket, well not me, the guru of welding Jim of Whats Crakin.

Because of the smaller celica Master cylinder (to avoid the Brake diaphragm) needed a narrower Slave Cylinder. Bit of bush calcs but seems after resleeving back to 21mm and a test today all looks good.

Thanks Jim. The filter is ready to go on. Thought it might be better to turn engine over and then put in filter. Interior is a couple of weeks away. Finalise electrics this week. Then exhaust and then turn engine over followed by interior and glass. Still hope 5 weeks away. Starting to plan our first cruzin holday in October so has to be ready for then.

The filters seem to be different. Thought I needed a R4P but not sure now.

I think I'm missing something here, shouldn't the roof lining be in the ute not on the floor? I guess thats a roundtoit job. What brand power windows have you used? they look like an easy fit!!!!. So when is the roll out party? bet you can't wait to have it on the road.

Had machinery inspector around yesterday. Issues were rear handbrake cable and the axle rubber stops with the Commodore diff.

Anyway all seems OK for a registration maybe next week.  ;D

Coming together nicely now Wayne, somehow i completely missed the update with the electric windows, what a great idea they look pretty simple to fit and not too many moving parts 8), i was thinking about using the Dynamat in the roof of the FC instead of the tar covered cardboard stuff is it already sticky on one side or do you have to apply glue, also how well does it stick as i shutzed the roof to stop rust.

Pedro, the Dynamat is extremely sticky. I actually put the cheaper stuff in the roof as I thought the roof lining would provide additional heat and noise reduction. I wish in hindsight I did use the dynamat. It is great stuff. The electric windows do seem simple. I had the wiring laid out this evening and it is setup for a novice.

The smoke is from a couple of loose bolts on the manifold. The Alternator bracket needs a fine tune. A bit of vibration. Missed getting it ready for holidays, but that happens.

Well what a crazy month. Nothing done on the car, but I sure know the airports, lots of travelling for work.

In the interim the trimmer has done my fourth sets of bucket seats. Started with the electric jag, then 79 Land Rover then Toyota Yaris and now these. Not going to mention name.

Thanks all. Have been messing with a solution for the rear handbrake cable for the commodore axel.

As you can see I am using a hidden turnbuckle to the equaliser and a fitting to a thingy that goes onto the brake lever. I can then use a standard commodore rear cable, $10 from the wrecker.

Can anyone see any issues with this solution?

Had to make brackets to support the front of the commodore cable otherwise you will have to find a way to hold the rear section into the commodore backing pad as they pop out . maybe slit it either side and use a brake line clip and dont run supports on the front.

Do you need any other photos from underneath mine as I have utilised tthe Commodore equaliser and a 25cm threaded rod I sourced and reenigineered from the Commodore Hanbrake Lever. I then welded a nut onto the end of it so that it sat inside the yoke and onto the lever itself.

I'm doing the super in my ek it fits nice but theres a lot of working out to get it right, i'm going with the e-z clips system (aeroquip) finding it hard to find who is selling the right hose for that setup and i'm going through the drivers side guard two & 1/2 blockheads & a lot more connextions.but it is fun and keeps the grey cells working

Hand Brake widget installed. Will need cable deflectors. Without the weight of the fruit it looked like it was going to fit for a while. Will wait until it is up on a hoist. Hard work underneath now.

Anyway Happy new year. I did not quite make it for 2012 but 2013 has only just started. My son has claimed his car (the one I have been driving, got his licence just before Christmas) so if I want a car I have to beg, well ask nicely anyway, so I am motivated. Not far away. Modified battery tray,electrics for Air con and power windows and then Bobs your uncle.

Hi Wayne, I did  the same looking fuel flap on my ute, very similar, I used a  84 lazer (mazder 323)

Mine was a mid eighties Nissan. Took a number of trips to the wreckers, finally found one. It had to be turned upside down and made narrower to get to the neck of the fuel tank. Anyway looks cool.

Anyway I need some help. What is the best way to secure the top radiator panel to cross frame. I have been looking at self clinching nuts but I remember someone having another idea that needed a special tool. May have been Pete.

For whats its worth should have welded a captive nut on before painting. Would be a lot easier.

G,day Wayne, sorry to read about your time in hospital, sure hope all is on the mend. Hope you can get back into the ute and finish her off in the near future. I have been flat out with work and the car has come off second best, not much done although I have been able to get half way through the right hand side with the rear floor and inner sill now done(will post some more photos when I have done the outer sill.

I am looking at the power windows myself and have two types from my donor car. The rear motors run in a straight C channel like yours and I (prior to looking at yours) considered using these in the front doors. What motors did you use and did you make the channel to fit?

Hi Nes sorry for the late reply. I purchased an electric window kit from the States. The whole kit and caboodle. It looks the part. The switches are a whole different thing. I am only a couple of weeks away from a solution. It involves F#$d switches from the early seventies. I have had to have one of the electronic switch cards set a passenger and drivers side switch instead of an interior light and the single switch. I will post some photo's shortly. The period look is not easy for a ute 2 door. Unfortunately one of the electric mirrors fell over before it struck a blow so waiting for a replacement from Perth. The mirrors all tie in with the windows.
 
My health is improving with the help of drugs offcourse and a new target is the September school holidays for completion.

I looked at HK Brougham elec window switches which are all chrome and look pretty good. However, I now have found a switch which the window winder handle attaches to so I can keep my handles and door trim the same.

Mate of mine gave me BA F@lcon motors which are run off a cable. I plan to adapt these to the door (as suggested by fcwrangler).

For those who have not been following, the drivers side control (Toggle Switches) for the electric mirrors is out of a Jag. The window switches are from a 70's F@#d and both a housed on a purpose built chromed plate . This has taken almost 12 months to solve. Still have a slight problem trying to get all the wires in the arm rest. To make it easy I had a 10 core cable made to get all the power and controls to the passenger side. Worked a treat.

Minor update. Out of hospital again back in a few weeks. Know what's wrong now just a few more tests and then fix it. No alcohol, no sugar or no salt for 6 months is loosing its appeal. The car has been in a garage trying to get the underbody stuff done for rego whilst it is on a hoist.

Leaf Spring Mounting. Bought a conventional sway bar for an FC and no issues with the commodore diff.

The next few are of the Celica Gear box mounting points. Used a Commodore mounting plate from Dellow between the 2 longitudinal rhs sections welded in place while the car was on its back. A piece of angle line welded to that frame was used when the gearbox location was known.

always a relief to get a diagnosis.

why cant you use original handbrake \BKT on backing plate ?

Mine did not have the original bracket on. What do they look like? It is a tight squeeze to get the cable under and over into the back of the disc.


NES will find out next week from the engineer how he feels about the cable being on the spring.

Hi Craig D I am using the same V6 Conversion speed sensor to mechanical drive as you but where did you get the 90 deg adaptor I am having a little trouble with the bend on my speedo cable into the box being tight that adapter looks like it makes it easier to connect is it jsut an adapter or is it converting the ratio as well?

What do you need except for rego to make it to Rocklea for the All GM day? I'm loving it Wayne but you will have to take that tow ball off when you put your special plates on . I'll give you a call . Cheers mate.

Tool kit is brilliant, love it!

Battery Isolator from England fitted. Still needs the bypass circuit otherwise very cool with a remote isolator.

Out of hospital now. Don't have to go back for a year, remarkable really, the difference. 8 Month's from initial incident to diagnosis then operation.

Pete the radio speaker grills arrived while I was in hospital. They look fantastic.

I know I keep saying it but not long now. Got a bit of an overheating problem. Added an additional front electric fan today. Did not solve the problem. Temp measured 200 degrees at the radiator. Measured it with one of those laser themo guns. Very cool. Will have to have a deeper look next weekend.

wow, nearly everyone has died lately or had operations on the threads I have read. These things are dangerous beasts bahahaha.

And another operation in a week or so. No chance of dying though. ;D - thank goodness. Car progressing slowly. During recuperation I am going to try and get it registered. Have solved the overheating problem..............I think. We will see.

Been a while but could not solve the radiator problem. Decided to change over to the bigger EH. Some minor mods at the base to fit between the subframe (plus the cutting and shutting to the body). Relocated the electrics. The new SPAL fan now  sits off centre surrounded by an alley shroud. Looks the part. Thanks Haydn and Pete for the help.

The shroud misses air con compressor by 10mm. Very tight but it all works. Had car running for half an hour this morning and all seems fine.

Some very interesting learning on the heat problem.

Lesson learnt - put in bigger radiator at re-build stage, unless your complete stock off-course.

Update on Caravan. Progressing on caravan rebuild or should I say pulling apart. Considering my FC build I don't think anyone expects me to have a standard rebuild. Will post photo's when some forward progress made. Some of you may have spotted beefing up the electrics for the caravan in beside the battery.

From 14/03/2008 to 11/08/2014 what a journey. I am pleased announce that the ute is now registered with the necessary blue tag for brakes, bucket seats, gear box and HR front end. There are so many people I want to thank and I'm sure I will forget someone.

Haydn without whom this build would not have happened, thanks.

Pete for all the little things I just could not get. Ken for those awkward parts "in his stash" out the back. Jim, FC White (Craig, can't get used to the new handle), NES, Wassim, Ratmatt, HARV, FE 4 ME, JB, RET, fe350chev  and BLOK for their continual encouragement over the years. Pedro for his inspirational build just so happening at the same time as mine.

And a big thanks to the rest of the FE-FC Family for their kind words, idea's and suggestions. Words cannot express my gratitude and sheer delight at being a part of this wonderful group of people.

Still need to do some things on the ute but will leave that for another day.

Wayne you have been very encouraging with my builds. What will you do now?

Caravan ,mate. Started a few months ago.

Still have nagging issues with the car.

The biggest issue has been a leaking fuel tank. The commodore fuel tank was split along the seam. Tried for weeks to fix. Have bitten the bullet and getting an alloy tank custom built. Over it. Also have the timber in the tray to replace. The wipers have been a nightmare, ETC, ETC. I'm sure everyone knows once your finished it only just starts.

Will post some photo's of the new tank and the new tray. Something special getting done for that.

I have rethought mine and have opted to make a custom tank from drawings from a bloke on here. 3mm Aluminium sheet. I really like the colour. Is it a slight variation of the Holden blue? It really is a great looking car. At least you don't have all the bits and pieces to contend with. You oughta see how much space is being taken up in my shed  :-\

The checker plate with the wheel well was an absolute nightmare. There is only a few mm's spare so it took 3 goes to get the front angle right so the tyre could fit in and out on a lean. Very happy with the result.

Have done just over 500 miles and its going good. Still only a 1000 things to improve but very happy.

The overheating seems to have been solved. The air con works. The electric windows need a minor adjustment on drivers side.

Have been very busy at work so its been hard to get on. I cannot get my head around tap talk but trying.

I agree about the 1000 things to improve I am still finding little things and big to improve and refine on my sedan; it has been said before that we don't ever really finish them.
