Title: Countdown to Orange
Post by: customFC on February 11, 2010, 11:42:41 PM
Well, it is now only 50 days before the start of the 13th FE FC Holden Nationals in Orange.
To help get everyone in the mood for the biggest gathering of FE FC's since the 50's I thought it might be interesting to look back on the history of the event. Every 5 days (or so) I will put up some pics from previous Nationals in this thread, counting back to the first ever Nationals. So look out for the next installment!!
I think the 12th and the 11th Nationals have had some good coverage over the past few years, but here are a few links to fairly recent posts to refresh your memory.

12
Mt Gambier in SA was the venue for the 12th Nationals in 2008, check out some coverage here:
http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,13117.0.html ($2)

11
Philip Island in Vic played host in 2006, to the largest gathering of FE FC thus far.
Here is some coverage of the 11th Nationals:

10
Jindabyne, Snowy River country, was the home of the 10th Nationals back in 2005. The FE-HR Holden Club of ACT were the organisers of this event, and featured some beautiful backdrops and a great venue in the Station Resort.

Alex,

Fantastic photo's as always and obviously some great memories for you as well. Thankyou so much for starting this topic in the lead up to the Nats, it gives those of us that have never been before some idea of what to expect. There are some period accessories that I have not seen before in some of the photo's, such as the rear spats on the FC with the rego "OLKAT". I am really looking forward to attending this event.

The 8th Nationals were held in Sydney, in 2001.
The basecamp was at Penrith in Sydney's west, with the show being at Windsor.
The weekend also included games events in Homebush, adjacent to the Olympic precinct and a cruise into the city and across the Harbour Bridge.

Ahh, memories. That's the Zig-mobile and my ol' Faecal get raced across the paddock. 'Revhead_FC', 'FE_STD_WAGON' and 'Al' are all in that pic. So am I, in the driver's seat. There are probably more forum members in the background there.

The rocker-cover racing pic has at least 3 forum members in it that I can see: 'ziggy', 'Tailshaft_Tim' and 'mcl1959': all with a few less miles on the clock ;)

It's after midnight. That means only 21 days  :-\ :-\ :-\

Hey Scott
That trim kit is a Tilli kit known as the Crestline.
Not the same as Tony's FC, which is unconfirmed as a Miami.
Take a look in AotW for more info.

Always interesting photos and information from you Alex.

BTW - keep forgetting to mention this - the 2/3 page "advert" in the current Australian Street Rodding (page 5) looks good - should help drum up some more interest.  :)

When the 2nd Nationals came around, it was NSW's first shot at running the event.
The location chosen was Wagga Wagga in NSW.

My apologies for the limited range of pics. This was the only Nationals event that I have not attended, and the pics have been borrowed. Can't give photo credits however, as I can't recall who took them. (If you are the photographer, please let me know and I will be sure to post up a credit)
If anyone has some more pics they would like to add, I encourage you to do so. Email them to me if posting them is too hard. custom@idx.com.au

It was a much simpler affair in those days, wasn't it? There are a few (much younger looking) faces in the crowd there I recognise: Greg & Belinda Pritchard, Dave Baker, Geoff "Gertie" Saul & daughter Shannon, John Tonkin and Di Power.

I reckon the trophies from that event still look great, twenty years later.

See you in Orange, next week!

It's interesting to see the quality of the pictures.  I forgot just how more vibrant colours are with modern digital cameras.  The colour may have lost some of the punch when they were scanned but speaking of camera's hows the video camera on that poor blokes shoulder.  I get pi$$ed of having to carry my little one around at car shows, let alone one the size of the FC Fuel Tank.

None the less stll very interesting to look at all the so called fashion. lol.   I will probably looking back in 20 years laughing at what Im wearing now.  :P

The first FE FC Nationals was held in Ballarat, Victoria.
This event started out as a get together between the Vic club and the SA club over the Easter weekend. The NSW club heard about the get together and thought it was a good idea and also made the journey to Ballarat. The event was a success, with many new friends made. It was decided that the concept was one that needed repeating, and a plan was struck for the next Nationals to be held in Wagga the following Easter. The plan was to rotate the organisation of the event between the clubs and that going forward it should be held every 2 years.

After a short cruise, we settled into some parklands for the day.

Just a question as a matter of interest....

From the first Nationals to the 13th...  What were the progressive entrant numbers, as Orange will have around 165 cars, wondering how many started and the growth rate.

Cheers
JB

I am sure this information could be pulled together from old run reports etc, but to my knowledge a ready reckoner of numbers at each event has not been put together.
From my photos, there were 38 cars at the first Nationals.

Alex

Thanks Alex for a fantastic "Countdown"!
Those early pics will be a great nostalgic look back for the participants who still show their cars. A few I picked out are a bit beefier these days tho'  ;D
well done

JB, we had about 75 cars at Jindabyne, I understand there were about 140 cars at Phillip Island, from memory there were around 120 at Mt Gambier, now here we are getting ready for Orange. I stand to be corrected, but the average pre Jindabyne I think was around 65-70 cars.

Come on Orange! 2 more sleeps!

Colin.
