Title: FC wagon/panelvan, not sure what to call it...
Post by: nelgy on January 10, 2010, 08:32:18 AM
Hi Guys,
ive just purchased my first fc holden.
But im not sure what style it is.
I also want to find out some of the history regarding the car as its not a regular car.
Can anyone help?
Its the shape of a station wagon, but the drivers side is like a panel van, as in it has no rear passengers door.
thanks
nelgy

Nelgy, you'll have to post some piccies and also the details from the body plate under the bonnet. Don't forget the number off the subframe.

Colin.

Sounds like a typical three door conversion to a panel van, mobs like Baileys and other body builders did them? (info on here do a search of three door van)

Nelgy, this is a well known car in the Vic and NSW club.
It was first seen here in Victoria about 20 years ago in its original grey colour owned by Peter Ramsay with rego CER 921 (not original). I believe he had found it stored in a shed and got it on the road.
Later owners were Duane Pickering and Daniel Jordan - one of these 2 owners painted it in its current colour I think. This is when it moved to NSW about 15 years or so ago.

There are quite a few of these vehicles still surviving in bot FE and FC form. They were built in Victoria by Baileys Motor Body Builders and by other companies in other states. But Baileys seemed to be really good at it and converted hundreds of them. They are essentially a factory panel van with a wagon rear door and rear seat added along with full roof lining and a sliding window.

More later - tea is on

I just had a look at the location (URL) of your avatar and guessed the rest.

Soooo......., they were built primarily for tradesmen who wanted a van for work and a wagon for taking the family out in.  Back in the days when families only had 1 car.
They came in various configurations, the cheapest was a van with a wagon rear seat. (The kids climbed over the front seat). The 3 door was pretty much the upper end but the Baileys advertisement I have shows one with 2 tone paint (similar to how this one now looks) and with spats and a sunvisor - they had marketed it as an Estate Car.
I don't have any records of them being used by the police since they would have been painted in Police blue (a factory order colour). But this doesn't mean that there were none.

I have 5 on my database

It is impossible to follow up original owners with Vic roads because of privacy issues, but the AOMC can determine original registration for a fee.  It's build date is around March 1959.

Of somewhat peculiar interest is the fact that this is the latest one I have recorded. All 5 vans are dated between May 1958 and March 1959 - none later - I'm not sure whether they were not made later on. They are certainly not prevalent in later models such as FB EK EJ or EH although I have seen a few HR and HKTG ones about.

No, they closed up some time ago - I went there when I was restoring an FE 3 door van and got a lot of original rubber parts from them - they still had stock :o

I think I still have some rubber that goes around the sliding window somewhere in my collection of stuff.

Cool looking car, and ur lucky its well known around the circles to get all that background info.  Does the rear seat fold down, (either forward or backwards to allow for the panel van side to be utilised, and is it a one piece backed rear seat or does it divide into to so you can lay down either the left or right side?

Looks in quite good condition.  Enjoy the car and welcome to the forum.
