Title: Larger Clutch
Post by: Hobbo on November 02, 2009, 11:59:52 AM
Hi Dudes, As the small diameter clutch is hard to find, can the 179 large clutch kit fit into the grey bellhousing OK? Red Motor to Grey Gearbox. Thanks

From memory ??? the 149 clutch will fit but the 179  pressure plate is to large and hits the bellhousing .. I am sure some one will confirm  this or correct me if I'm having a seniors moment ....FC427......

thanks but I think I need the pressure plate mainly, the original clutch is too weak to take red grunt.

I think all the early reds are OK - 149, 179 & 186. Possibly the later reds which foul.

you will have to grind bellhousing for clearance if you are breaking grey clutches fitting stronger clutch will make weak point the gearbox which will fail if driven hard

It looks like I might have to start the motor up on the floor to make sure its going to clear? I am going to drive it with Kid Gloves till I get the Auto Floor, Trans etc. But at this rate I could bite the bullet and go whole hog !

It's not that bad really, I drove an FC with a red and what I thought was a 179 clutch for years with no problems at all. It was a long time ago (over 25 years) and I now can't really remember exactly what clutch plate it had. I know it wasn't a grey clutch though.

Hobbo, the clutch plate and pressure plate in my grey box are both 186 there is some grinding as suggested but you dont need to run the engine to fit ,  Bob Cambell Racing Engines in WA did mine he is old school give him a call and he wiil sort you out (089248 5311) Gary C

Its all good, I fitted the new larger clutch in today and found it just touched on the rivets on the pressure plate so some grinding and perfect! Its close though and checking it first is the best way to see where its going to touch. Motor and Gearbox is fitted and so is the HR Disc Brake Front End and EH H/D Radiator. I'll post Pix soon, Thanks Hobbo.
