Title: corroded wheel cylinders
Post by: kelnic on September 21, 2009, 11:28:44 PM
the other day i decided to get my fc out of winter hibernation, went for a drive only to discover that the front r/h brake was dragging.
pulled both front wheel cylinders off to find the pistons were corroded inside the stainless sleeve wheel cylinders.i cleaned and polished the pistons, honed the cylinders and replaced the cups. is there something i can do to stop the corrosion from happening again?

Hi,

There is a silicone brake fluid that does not absorbe water and hence no more corosion, but apparently it is rather expensive. Eventually i'll change to it for hirbernation stages. Power Brakes in Adelaide stock it or can get it i think.

or just change your fluids regularly using new, fresh fluid (not fluid which has been open and on the shelf for months).

Cheers

Or that to Ed, every two years regardless of Miles.

I agree with changing the brake fluid regularly but it won't solve the problem as the pistons are on the outer side of the wheel cylinder cups which hold the brake fluid in.
From past experience i've found steel wheel cylinder pistons corrode less than the alloy ones. Maybe stainless pistons might solve the problem???

Working in the brake business you learn a lot of tricks

The best way to prevent corrosion of the pistons is to give them a really good coating of rubber grease when installing them and make sure there is a little on the inside of the cap as well. This will also help with adjusting later on.

Not cheap to get sleeving done now - probably around $45 each I would think.
