Title: RATTY TAXI
Post by: DN2168 on August 18, 2009, 07:25:57 PM
Ladies & Gentlemen it is with much ado about nothing that I introduce my "Nats" project "RATTED OUT".

Many have seen it before in the JOD34N's new holden thead.
OK time to be sensible. I won't have the time or money to get the car up to the standard I wanted to before the nats as I don't have the skills to do it all myself. So I am now going to build the old girl up as a 'ratrod'. I have nearly all the parts for this type of build & it is a way of utilising parts that would of been sat on the shelf & never used.

Plan is Flat black, 186 & 5 speed, HR front end, HR diff rolling on tasmans (if I can find another pair).New parts will be rubber kit, brakes, suspension bushes & maybe a rewire.

Let the fun begin.

Dean.

GO THE RAT 8), c'mon Dean lets see some action :D, should've said you needed a wiring harness i could've chucked one in with those other bits, I won't need one as i'll be using the dunnydoor one.

True paul, it does need a couple of rust repairs done & I have a vision of how I want it to look when finished. I still have a couple of more shells in stock  ;).

And based on some of your 'obscure' requests for parts lately why am I not the least bit surprised by your plans  ::) ;D

Will be good to see you and your Rat at the Nats.  Keep us informed on your progress Dean! :)

Hi Dean,
Good luck, my FC is more complete than your and less to do but i reckon i will be lucky to get mine finished in time for the Nats. I am aiming to have it finished but who knows. :P

Well after getting the grey & white car scratched the other day project "ratted out" is back in the planning stages. I will be using a different base vehicle though.

She is going in for a new set of floor pans in a couple of weeks, other than that it is pretty well rust free.

I will keep you posted.

Dean.

What motor/box are you going to put into the ol girl?

Keith at this stage I am thinking Grey, but with a mild work-over. Not quite sure on gearbox, I have spoken to a couple of FJ racers who suggested getting a crashbox fitted out with EH internals. Diff & brakes will possibly be EH.

Cheers,

Having trouble deciding which way to go with the project. To paint or not to paint, it will not be stored under cover & will be a daily driver. Suppose it has lasted this long ::). put in a poll to get some feedback.

Thanks,
          Dean.

yeah flat black with purple and white pinstripes and paint the chrome silver frost, but you don't want to put those horrible Tasmans on it. They should be donated to a good cause. ;D ;D ;D    Dave

My vote's for leaving it as is, satin bumpers and de-trimming somewhat  ;D ;D

I do like the flat black thing, but at Wintersun, every second car seemed to be black this year

Just my 2c  :)

Title: Re: RATTED OUT
Post by: EffCee on July 12, 2010, 11:04:44 PM
Dean,

The choice is entirely yours, one thing that I have always remembered was a panel van that did the rounds at the van shows, that was painted in black chalkboard paint, pull up at any place and leave some chalk around and people would draw all over it, the artwork (if you could call it that) continually changed. If you didn't like something just give it a tub

Just a thought

Keith

Dean,

Paint the main FC colour in satin with gloss highlights.  I did this to an FE (with FE colour style) and it looks good.

Cheers

Ed

Title: Re: RATTED OUT
Post by: DN2168 on July 23, 2010, 07:08:51 PM
Hi Ed,

That sounds interesting, but I am leaning towards not painting it & using the money i would have spent on paint to get the brakes upgraded. I was given a set of HT stubs & arms today so it looks like I will be going that way. Probably do the P76 disc & HQ caliper setup from Hoppers. Just have to work out a rear end considering Commodore for the reliability factor. That way if I get excited with the 186 I won't start spitting banjo springs. ;)

Dean.

Still at the panelbeaters getting floor pans fitted. It is going to take a few weeks to get done so progress will be a bit slow till it comes home. The rears have been done but when I went over for a look I didn't have a camera with me. I will take one next time.

Mate, i love the way it looks as it is, has an awesome finish! Even like the Taxi theme, design up a logo for the doors, "Hellcab Taxi Co." or something similiar and paint it on the doors in a ratty finish to suit the rest of the car. (May even be able to help you out there if your keen?)

I just did a similiar thing to a old Valiant wagon i got off a mate, just kept the paint and panel as it was and built it along a Surf/Tiki wagon theme, came up pretty cool! I can post a pic if your interested. Thought id ask first being a Valiant and not an FE or FC. ::)

All good mate! :D  I know its not everyones cup of tea, but the objective was to ressurect a car that was otherwise probably going to be left to rot, and built to a very low budget (between 2-3 weeks wages), and something fun.

I dig what Deans doing with his FC, will look cool for not alot of coin, and he'll find he'll probably have as much fun in that car as anything he's owned! 8)

The best part is that he will be able to park it anywhere without the risk of some turd walking past with a coin, screwdriver or keys and damaging the finish.

The Taxi theme is all go now, was pretty much decided a few months ago whne the car went in for repairs. Singage will be "Ratty Taxi Co. ph 666." or "Yellows cabs.".

Big thanks for all the positive feedback on the build it is appreciated. Jim the Val looks awesome & thanks for the offer, Joe the guy that did the panel work has a young guy who is into graphic designing who is keen the be let loose at the FC. Who knows I might be able to make a few bucks on the side  ;D.

Thinking 186,Trimatic & HR disc front end. Was going to go bigger brakes but I will save that for another project.

Cheers,

Hit on the perefect theme I reckon Dean. The sign writer bloke has talent. Suits the car perfectly.

Love the woody panels on the wagon. I find nobody has trouble with the "V" word on this forum. Its only the "F" word which brings threats of banishment.  ;D ;D ;)

Thanks Deano, I am finding it very theraputic bashing the crap out of things ;D.

Cheers,
          Dean.

My name is Dean too Jamie so I think u meant that for the other Dean. Jamie, u are pretty hard on youself I reckon, U must lay there at night worrying about stuff right? I am a bit the same, I have to try and try til its all really good. If I cant do it to a certain standard then Ill usually opt to get someone else to do it if funds permit.

Dean, keep the pics going. It makes me more daring to try things that I wouldn't normally try if I see guys picking up tool they aren't using all the time. Well done.

Hi Joe,

Mate I saw you drive past....I was at work :(. Kids had BMX on in the afternoon, so that killed the drags idea. Hope you had a good day.

Work on the Taxi has stopped for the moment as I am trying to get the grey & white car back on the road. The joys of old cars :D.

Cheers,
          Dean.

Been doing a few rust patches on the Taxi, was going well until a little drop of lead hit my foot. I started to melt it to find out what was lurking underneath & found a little less metal than what I expected  :o.

That's a tough section to do Dean.
Doesn't look too bad. :) I cut my section out too. Waiting on new sills to see how much I need to re-manufacture or weld old sections back in.
Keep the pictures coming!

Thanks Nick & jamie,

The support you get on this forum is really great.

Funny thing happened at work yesterday (servo attendant), one of the local hiway patrol guys came in & I showed him a pic of the Taxi when we photoshopped it. I then asked him if it would attract his attention, his reply "if it looked like that, bloody oath!!, looks like it's just been dragged out of a paddock".
My reply "it has  ;D ". We then had a chat about it & he said as long as it's all road worthy they would have no drama's with it, just expect to get pulled over at first until they know the car. I know one of the local officers loves the grey & white car.

Might head off & see if any parcels have arrived.

Dean.

G'day Dean, good to see some progress on the old girl, just a quick tip with the welding, if you clean all the old paint and crap off before you weld you will find it easier as anything on the surface stops the currant flowing smoothly, one of those twist wire brushes on a 100mm angle grinder will clean it all up back to bare metal in seconds and they are pretty cheap.

No real progress on the Taxi of late. Hoping to get some done over Christmas break. I did go shopping last weekend. Some of these bits will find their way into the Taxi.(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/17/deje3ure.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/17/usy5apav.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/17/qy7y5y7e.jpg)
