Title: Need advise on how to replace left upper inner piviot joint
Post by: perth_fe_ute on May 27, 2009, 11:35:27 PM
Hello, after months of trouble shooting an issue where my steering pulls to the drivers side when braking, I have found the issue. Does anyone have a guide to replace the upper inner piviot joint? Thanks again.

Are you referring to the inner bushing and shaft on the upper control arm?

Yes - grind 2 opposing flats on the shaft and it will screw out. Use a BIG shifter, they are tight. You will also need to find a NOS one to replace it with though.

May be easier to get another front crossmember because the thread itself can be flogged out if the slackness has been there for a long time.

Wow what a pain in the but to replace. I ended up taking it to a suspension shot in Belmot who did the job and adjusted the camber with shims. Not an easy job for the home mechanic....

They adjusted the camber with shims? Are you talking about a stock FE front suspension.

If so, Either you misunderstood what they said or they don't know what they are talking about - camber is adjusted by the top screw thread on the outer pivot, you don't adjust it with shims like you do on a HR front end.

If you were talking about a HR front end all along - the upper inner pivot joint is dead simple to replace - you just unbolt it, throw it away, and bolt on another one.

It is a HR disc front end with alot of grease and kms. They said they used shims. The main thing is that it drives alot better. Next will be to remove the play in the steering but that can wait. Thanks again.
