Title: Clutch X Mark
Post by: mc54 on March 26, 2009, 06:19:51 PM
Hi All

I am replacing my clutch and I was reading in the manual to check that the "X" mark on the clutch cover is aligned with the "X" mark on the flywheel flange.
I have looked and cannot find an alignment mark on either one. I was under the impression that the pressure plate did not have a specific way to be lined up (there is no top or
bottom or left or right).
Also since I am replacing the pressure plate, what if the new one had no alignment mark?
Can someone please explain what they mean by this mark and why it is there.

Thanks

Mike

They use to mark the balance point  on some cars with an x for pressure plate alignment now days most engines are negatively balanced not sure if this is the case with early Holdens ........FC427.......

Only original clutch pressure plates and flywheels have this mark - they were put on from the factory, but after a flywheel grind and a new clutch installed, all the marks are long gone. I have seen the occasional pressure plate with the X on it, but few and far between.

Thanks Guys

Now I won't be looking for something that isn't there.
