Post by: denirapark1 on March 18, 2009, 08:46:18 AM
Hi, I hope someone can help.
We have a two tone blue fc special sedan and would like to know correct colour
for the engine bay.
Details of car-No. FC-225-8900-A
TRIM No.256-630
PAINT No.256-2033
RPO 253-2037.
I hope you can tell me from this what it should be
as we would like to get it right first time around.
Thanks Iris

Hi Iris,

On the main website page there is a series of technical info pages that enable you to decode your own car

I have included a link to the decoder page below

http://fefcholden.org.au/techinfo/idinfo.html ($2)

which when put into the decoder gives the following results

FC-225-8900-A Vehicle is an FC Special Sedan, the 8,900th manufactured in Adelaide, SA.

256-630 The Exterior Trim Code (256) describes this car as Two-Tone: Crystal Blue over Cambridge Blue.
The Interior Trim Code (630) refers to: Viscount Blue & Black.

256-2033  The Primary (bonnet, guards) colour is Cambridge Blue (in DUCO Lacquer)

253-2037  The secondary colour is Crystal Blue (in DUCO Lacquer)

Further information is available if you place in the chassis number and the engine number. This would give you an idea when the car was built.

Engine bay colour scheme changed throughout the model. I need the chassis number in order to tell you the correct colours.  What colour is the engine bay currently?

Have tried to find chassis number in the past but could'nt find it.
will have another look and see how we go.
Currently it is blue but wonted to make sure it hadn't been changed at some time.
The motor was not original when we got it.It was out of an EJ
but have since picked up one with the fc numbers etc.
Thanks for the other info. Will get back to you with numbers if we find them. Thanks Iris.

Iris,

The chassis number should be fairly easy to read its on the off side (drivers) inner guard on the flat section. It should start with either an 8 or a 9. I shouldn't be hard to find or read, if its not there it means the subframe has been changed or repaired.

regards
John

Hi,I have checked the chassis number and it comes up 6,434th FC in any body style assembled in Adelaide
but by the ID plate details its 8900.
So these 2 lots of numbers dont match up.
Could that mean the chassis could have been changed at some time ?.
Thanks Iris

Hi Iris,

It does appear that your front subframe that has the chassis number on it has been changed. Ken (mcl1959) is the one that has heaps of knowledge in regards to numbers. Ken may be able to give you an approximate chassis number range, and maybe you can work out what colour it neds to be painted

Not necessarily Keith. Bodies produced at Woodville were sent to other plants for assembly, Brisbane for sure and possibly Perth as well. This can account for the higher body number and lower chassis no resulting from its assembly in Adelaide. For example, I believe most FEs that were assembled In Brisbane came from Adelaide. My guess is that Iris' car is original. Ken will know better.

Cheers
John

John is right on the money, Adelaide bodies did indeed go to Brisbane & Perth for manufacture as well as for Adelaide supply. So your chassis number is correct according to my data base. I would date your car as mid December 1958 - it is one of the very last to use the "8" prefix. Changeover to FC prefix in 1959 occurred at around chassis number 7890 - around 460 cars past yours.

The engine bay colour is a little tricky around the turn of the year as this was the time GMH changed colour scheme - my feeling is that the firewall of your car should be blue and the skirts would have been black. This would tie in with the majority of cars made around this time. In 1959 the firewall became black as well allowing a cost saving to be implemented during construction.
