I remember first meeting Norm at the "Marques in the Park" show in Canberra in 2003. He'd been a forum member for a while by that stage, and he bowled up and introduced himself. We were standing around talking to Des West at the time, and between the racing car owner and the racing car driver, it was an interesting place to be. A few years later Norm made a huge effort to bring his race car up to Orange for the Gnoo Blas Classic (actually, that's on again this weekend). Even then he wasn't well enough to drive it, but he brought it anyway, just so other club members could have a bit of fun punting it around the race track. As someone else has already said, he was an incredibly generous bloke. RIP Norm. I called into to see them in May last year and despite his debilitation, he took us on an extended tour around the Young district....... Norm was a great "on-line" mate of the late Trev Roberts and they communicated regularly in the early hours of the morning..... Vale Norm Dawe You were one of a kind Daggsey Title: Re: R.I.P Norm dawe Post by: Ed on February 06, 2009, 04:52:36 PM I used to talk with Norm over the phone probably more about motorbikes than cars. He would ring me up out of the blue because he had seen something and thought I'd appreciate it. That was the kind of bloke he was.. generous and sharing. My condolences to Norm's family. You can Rest now Norm. Ed Title: Re: R.I.P Norm dawe Post by: fastjbav6 on February 07, 2009, 01:57:37 AM Condolences to Norms family on behalf of the WA Club.
I've "spoken" on line with Norm when I first joined the Forum and followed his Topics with interest. What more can you say, a bloke that was liked by all. May you rest in peace. I detected a little humour there ;) and when Bird of paradise was played - a beautifull song rang out from a bird in the trees nearby ,almost out of character amongst the dry orange hillside His family seemed well prepared and coped well under the circumstance and something that is not generally expected at a funeral is that he himself earned a very great round of applause. Those who didnt know him I feel sorry that you didnt get the chance... And I also didnt see anyone from the FC fraternity paying their respects which was very very dissapointing. Harko . PS The picture of Norm and his daughter is exactly how Id like to remember him ;) Title: Re: R.I.P Norm dawe Post by: CraigA on February 11, 2009, 12:16:17 AM Hi Harko,
Like a few other guys on here would have done I did spare a thought for Norm today, even though other commitments made it impossible to make the trip out to Young. He liked you a lot and always spoke of the times you had visited so its great you could attend. Quote Those who didnt know him I feel sorry that you didnt get the chance... This is a very appropriate comment. He was a high quality guy who took the great challenges handed to him in his stride and never let them get him down. Cheers, Craig. PS: I've got a copy of Norm's C.D and intend to play it for a long time to come. ;D Title: Re: R.I.P Norm dawe Post by: Rusty_T on February 11, 2009, 09:09:54 AM Craig and Harko,
Check the articles in the last issue of Sideplate. We lost a couple of real characters these last 8 weeks. Cheers Rusty Title: Re: R.I.P Norm dawe Post by: FC_Driver on February 11, 2009, 01:15:25 PM Hi Harko
As I am the nearest member from the FC ferternity living near Norm, (I think) I take on board what you say in reguards to the non attendance at Norms Funeral. I,.. like a lot of others could not make it for reasons I wish not to say here. Yes it was dissapointing that there was no one from the FC ferturnity attending. As usual your a straight shooter....I like that... You do have me thinking about weather I made the right decission in not attending, however life is full of hard decissions. Thanks Harko for reporting on Norn's funeral Take Care Bruce FC_Driver Title: Re: R.I.P Norm dawe Post by: CraigA on February 11, 2009, 02:43:12 PM Quote Check the articles in the last issue of Sideplate. We dropped off a copy of "Sideplate" to Norm's wife yesterday so Norm's family could see the nice words that were written. We also dropped off a copy of this thread from the begining up to and including Harko's funeral report. Norm's family were very touched by the kind words expressed. I droped off a copy (to Norms family) of the 2010 Orange Nationals program, with the article on Norm and his FC. May Norm RIP....... Bruce & Jan Title: Re: R.I.P Norm dawe Post by: CraigA on November 08, 2014, 07:05:33 PM An old thread but about a terrific fella. Gone but never forgotten.
I had some axles made for my XU1 by Keith Croft and when I picked them up he told me he built an FC race car in the late 60's. Well it turns out it was the car that Norm bought when he owned a music shop on Blacktown NSW After Norm passed away the car was stripped and restored by a family member and is now partially completed and at Greystanes NSW. I have the details for the current owner and can pass them on if anyone is interested. PM me of you are serious. It's not cheap but a significant early FC racer that you can get a Cams log book for. That and the person who originally built it has verified it and has lots of early pictures. RIP Norm. Not forgotten. Ever. |
