Post by: NosFEratu on December 04, 2008, 03:54:31 PM Hi Ed
Been wondering how long it would be before we saw your current project! ;) Looks like you've been having fun! ;D Kathi Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Ed on December 04, 2008, 04:02:51 PM I had to figure out how to get the URL's off my facebook photo album. I've given up on photobucket, but I wont remove the pics I have uploaded there.
Project has been fun, and relatively cheap, made in China items and ebay make it so. Challenges aren't nearly as great as a car project, but the deadline for ready by Christmas is looming. Last jobs are to paint, make a custom fibreglass deck and get the gear ratio right. It's has a 6.1 gear ratio currently but I plan to bump it up to about 9:1, to get some acceleration. This is my stepson's Christmas gift, and he has no idea I've built it... lol I was looking at it, thinking I could possibly motorise an FE lounge chair... wonder if I could gain entry to the Nats with that? would that be a custom? Cheers Ed Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Rabbitoh on December 04, 2008, 04:28:16 PM What a great stepdad you are Ed 8), that sure takes a lot more effort than getting him some crap gift from a department store- hope he appreciates it 8)
Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: waynos on December 04, 2008, 07:44:11 PM fe motorised lounge chair?
i love it do ya need a hand i got a couple a whipper snipper motors i 've been saving for a rainy day Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: FC427 on December 04, 2008, 09:18:12 PM Ed I want to race your souped up scooter against my old mini bike ......FC427.....(http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii234/FC427/IMG_1310.jpg)
Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Ed on December 05, 2008, 08:25:08 AM thanks Rabbitoh, I hope he likes it too..
waynos, I have a whipper snipper too, but to mount those you need to spindle mount to the wheel. (ie no clutch). I'm thinking the weight of the chair etc, another pocket bike motor will be the go. Basically a trike frame under the lounge... weight will be an issue, as will air cooling the motor. I'm thinking it will be the next project for sure tho. Mark, the challenge is on, Ive just ordered a bigger rear sprocket tho, what ratio do you run on the bike? that motor looks bigger than the 47cc I've got on the scooter. Cheers Ed Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Johns on December 05, 2008, 09:21:44 AM Is that a Yamaha RD motor?
Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: FC427 on December 05, 2008, 09:29:58 AM Johns you know your Yamaha's your spot on RD 200 just a little bigger than the Victa 160 the Dexon came with and a lot more fun ......FC427......
Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Johns on December 05, 2008, 11:45:01 AM Shite Mark, you'd need 6' wheelie bars to keep it on the ground :o
Cheers John Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Ed on December 05, 2008, 11:54:33 AM weapon
bikes are supposed to wheelie John. you cant ride a bike and not pull wheelies!! the muggles young and old love it. ;D ;D Cheers Ed Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: TTV6FC on December 05, 2008, 08:13:02 PM Oh dear,I can see this spiralling out of control.... ::).Like a mate of mine who built a Go-Kart with a 650 road bike motor in it!Trouble....

Post by: Paul In Ireland on December 22, 2008, 09:29:33 AM That is one nice looking way to get around.
Can I be a bit awkward and say that I would try and find some nice black rubber matting to go on the ply if it was me? But there is no way I could make something like that, even if I tried. I'd be like Homer Simpson and his bbq.. Paul. 8) Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on December 22, 2008, 09:29:42 AM Very Cool!
All it needs now is a thermo fan and a new shroud :P ;D Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Ed on December 22, 2008, 09:44:57 AM Thanks Paul ;D
The deck is temporary, I'm planning to build a swoopy, curvy deck from fibreglass. Not sure how It will grip although your rubber pad suggestion will be useful. Stinky, I outsmarted myself and went air cooled, although check out the chain guard. It's a one-off fibreglass piece. Hey it works.. Thanks Leon. Scooter was built on a budget ya know. Cheers Ed ;D Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: NosFEratu on December 22, 2008, 11:12:47 AM And BTW - when them wheels are spinnin' no-one will be able to tell! ;)
Looks good Ed - I'm sure he'll be stoked! :D Kathi Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Ed on December 22, 2008, 11:19:51 AM Thanks Kathi,
I reckon the kid will be stoked too :) On the test ride(s), I was the envy of every kid and adult (big kid) on the block! handing over the "keys", or in this case the pull start will be a pleasure. I would highly recommend this as a type of project to hone some skills prior to attacking a project, or as a project to teach your kids some new skills... not that I shared the fabrication.. lol Cheers Ed Title: Re: my latest project. Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: pedro on February 15, 2009, 06:01:54 PM Hadn't noticed your scooter before ED, great peice of engineering work there, how well did it go, any pics coming of it in action, do you make moulds for the fiberglass work, I've made a couple of surfboards in the past but that's just applying fiberglass to foam, the shape is already there, making a freeform shape like that would be a different matter ???
Pedro the curious ;D ;D Title: Re: my latest project. Post by: Ed on February 16, 2009, 05:18:48 PM Hey Jamie, thanks for the advert.. inspiration.
I just picked up 3 whipper snippers and a vintage mower off the kerb from council cleanup. I’ve got a “turner” mower with a Villiers motor. Pedro, howzit going? The scooter needed further bracing at the lower stem, the kid decided to jump it. Top speed on the flat has been clocked at 55kmh (by me riding a pushbike behind him ;D ;D ;D) With a slight downhill he dropped me at 55kmh, estimated speed was over 60kmh. The fibreglass wasn’t free form, you mould it around a special urethane foam then you can either chip the foam out or use it as a mould for production. Easy as pie. I have a sequence of pics if anybody is interested in me posting a "how-to" on fibreglassing. Fibreglass is good but it makes a mess… Cheers Ed |
