Title: Nasco Ornamental Jewel
Post by: slim on November 12, 2002, 10:59:11 AM
Can anyone shed some light on this for me, what is a nasco ornamental jewel, where does it go , and what purpose does it serve (if any). I have never seen this nasco part and just saw it listed in the technical section!   SLIM

Hi Slim

Can't help you with any answers but saw a jewel attached to an FX grill emblem on a 1952 FX Sedan in a shed a couple of weeks ago. It was faded in the top half and had been on the car a long time. It is the first time I have seen a Jewl on a car.

Cheers

Slim,

I've only ever seen a couple of them, I guess they weren't that popular an accessory.  They were typically used to add a little 'something' to standard models (or that was the intention, anyway).  A bit like the Caprice and Premier badges that are fitted to the 'C' pillar of some models.

Hope that helps,
RET

The jewell is about 40 mm in diam, with the FJ hub cap centre section covered in a thick plastic or epoxy.
It has 2 clips which go through the body and is held on much the same way as the glove box emblem.
I have had a couple of them go through the car club auction and they usually bring about $200 each.

Would you have a picture you could post , as a few people into FE/FC are as unsure as I am, as to what they look like. Would be much appreciated , as it is hard to look for something when you dont know what it looks like?   THANKYOU   SLIM.         P/S I got the parts catalogue book, Thank you Again

Slim, I know a guy who has an ornamental jewel still in the package but it is mega bucks. He said something like
$600.00. If you want a name and number let me know.
Kev.

I have just been told that the jewels are actually for a FX/FJ and not an FE/FC, is this correct as I am currently bidding on one at the Ebay site, I was going to put it on my FC panelvan , but now have become unclear as to there origins.  Could anyone shed some more light on this subject for me .     SLIM

As I understand it (and please correct me if I'm wrong anyone) the jewel was originally released as a Nasco accessory for 48/FJ (it looks a lot like an FJ horn button).  It was definitely still sold as an accessory through the late 50s, as it appears frequently in issues of "Accelerator" (the Holden/Nasco dealer magazine).  My Dad has my collection of Accelerators at the moment, so I can't check, but I think the ads always show the badge either by itself or in its box.  I don't think there's a pic of one mounted on a car.

It also appears on the back page of the Nasco accessory brochure for the FE, so that's pretty definite:
Quote
ORNAMENTAL JEWEL
A miniature replica of the Holden Emblem, of special appeal to Holden Standard owners, complete with attaching parts.

However it does not appear in the Nasco Accessories Catalog #93-ACCESS-58, which is supposedly the exhaustive list for the FC.

I've only ever seen one on an FC that I can recall, and that was at the first Nats in Ballarat, 1988.

Hope that's some help,

RET

Hi All
RET are there 2 types of jewells? as the ones i have look like miniature FJ hubcaps.
SLIM  I have seen only 2 FCs in Sydney with the jewells fitted, both were attached to the speaker grille.

Horn button, hubcap *shrug*  I was thinking mostly of the acrylic casing and depth with that description.

There's only one jewel AFAIK.

Slim, I just had a look at the jewel on ebay and this is DEFINATELY the one.
I have only ever seen a few fitted to cars as original.  One was on the quarter panel of a ute, the other was on the front doors of a FC sedan.
RET is 100% right - they were in the FE accessories list but seem to have disappeared by FC.  I suppose the styling was old and they were a poor seller - so they were simply dropped from sale.
Surprising how many NOS ones turn up though.
We have had a few go through the auction, but none have even come close to $600 though  :o

G'day guys...
Looking at my photos from the last Nationals, there was an FC there that had a jewel on the radio grille... my pic dosn't show it up too well, and I can't remember who's car it was now.... might have been Tony's, or maybe one of the ones from Canberra...

Also, the latest book by Don Loffler called "The FJ Holden" has a few photos - including a colour one - of the jewel attached to the dash board of an FJ Sedan... I guess it's presence in the book confirms it was at least an FJ accessory..

If you're still interested in seeing a pic, I can try and scan it in for you.... failing that, maybe someone else out there has a better pic.... let me know...

Cheers
Hewart...
