I asked this question a couple of weeks ago and the majority of the forum told me to let the electroplaters do it as they have the pickling chemicals to remove the old chrome without damaging the metal underneath. I was keen to sandblast and had experimented on a door handle with, what I thought, was good results. The very fine sand took the chrome and the copper coat off really well. When I took it into the electroplater he virtually laughed in my face, called me a d%ck and told me I had wrecked the handle because now there were microscopic bits of sand stuck all through the metal and he couldn't re chrome it. I guess it depends whether you want the bits re chromed or you are going to paint. My two bobs worth. Scuff them up using 40 to 80 grit on a DA sander.. then paint using a good quality etch. Cheers Ed |
