Title: Paint Style
Post by: KFH on March 09, 2008, 09:52:35 PM
I have two questions on the paint style for a 59FC.  I believe my car is totally original but would like to check the following.

1  The engine bay is black as well as the Body Identification tag.  Should this Ident tag be painted?  Some photos I have seen show the tag as bare aluminum while others it is painted the firewall colour.

2  The colour under the wheel arches. I have seen some painted with the body colour while others are black.  My car is predominately black in these areas except under the front guards where there is a little bit of overspray on to the inner guards with the body colour.  It appears the body was painted without the front outer guards off and the inner guards attached.

I wish to restore this car as close to original as possible.

Victorian cars had a black painted ID plate whilst NSW cars had unpainted. I'm not sure about QLD production though. Once again there are exceptions to this rule and I would copy what has been done on your car originally. Same goes for inner front guards. If engine bay was all black then entire subframe was black, but if subframe skirts were coloured then the whole subframe was this colour. It's up to you whether you want to reproduce the overspray look on the inner guards or not.

Thanks Ken.  My car is a Sydney made vehicle so obviously there are exceptions to the rule of painting the ID tags.  I wont be worrying about reproducing the over spray look on the inner guards.

Hi Keith'

Here is a photo of my mid 1959 Sydney built wagon, it too has a black id plate.
