Title: Removing FE grille
Post by: FEHOLDEN on February 08, 2008, 09:45:03 PM
Giday all

Trying to remove grille from effie in order to remove grey and put in 186.

Cant find chapter how to do it in workshop manual. I have removed just about every bolt I can find, its loose but still wont budge. A site search revealed I can remove grey without  removing grille as long as gerabox is attached. Will I get 186 in [HR front end] the same way? I will be using original box due to "race against time" issues.

Denis, you need to remove the bolts from the top of one guard as well as the bolts which hold that guard to the splash pan under the grille and the stay in the guard lip. Remove the bolt from the outer bumper bar position as well. This will allow you to push the guard outwards about 10 mm and let the grille come out.

If you use a grey motor lifter, and the subsequent red motor lifter, it is quite simple to install and remove the motors either with or without the gearbox attached. I find it easier to leave the gearbox attached myself.

With or without gear-box attached, you should be able to hoist the motor out or in with the grille in place. With the radiator out and front cover (where the bonnet lock is) off, you've got a fair bit of room to maneuvre the engine out.

If you've got a mate or two to help, it's a lot easier.

I'd avoid pulling the grille out if you can, it's a mongrel to put back in again.

cheers

Exactly what RET said, that's what I meant to say in the last paragraph, but didn't say it ::)

thanks RET and Ken

I took the cowards way out and removed motor with grille still in place and gearbox attached. Came out easier than I thougt  ;D Just in the middle now of fitting HT discs to HR front end then swapping over and dropping 186 in. Looking good atm for having car in Mt.Gambier.  Only need engineer and reg  ::)

Thanks again
