Title: changing diff gears.
Post by: Ed on January 18, 2008, 10:30:38 AM
Hey guys,

Im interested in changing my diff gears and want to see how hard it is before i embark on this project.

it's a ford 9 inch, i wish to change to 3.5 gears, it has an LSD centre.

my experience with diffs is with banjos only... ie just remove the entire carrier and slot a new one in... or that's the amount of care i gave it...

is this a job for the experts or should any home mechanic be able to perform this task with a little care.

Cheers

Ed

Hey Ed,

When I went from the open wheel to LSD, I had to use the same pinion as matched to the centre. I had a guy put mine in... I think the term is blue it in to get the gears to mesh properly... All out of my league is why I had someone do it.

Cheers
Jason.

P.s Is there still a Cairns trip left in that thing.... YOU promised!!!

Hey Jas,

Yep i reckon I will out source it if i do it.

Currently re-wiring my power distribution as it needed some minor improvement, painting things, heater and radiator out.  Has anybody else got a VN commodore with that fusible link box??  mine went into melt down, as a preventive measure I'm changing it to a cluster of circuit breakers.  I think there must have been a loose connection (despite the power feed being bolted to the fusible link).  Fuse didnt blow so I m pretty sure it wasn't drawing too many amps.

A Cairns trip is still on the cards, I need to find the time to do it.  We run our own business so it makes it a little difficult to nail down a time, also the family thinks anything over 15 minutes in the FE is a long drive.  I guess They can fly up and I will meet them there.  ;D

Cheers

Ed

Mark,

they are supposed to be 3.25 but I'm not sure they really are.

I will jack up the car and turn the wheels and count the rotations to check.

car just seems sluggish and has a high top end.

3.5 or 3.7 would probably wake it up without compromising cruisability.

Will wait until after the NAts.

Cheers

Ed

Hi Ed same as the ones  have 3.25 to 1  for the Hot Rod I have to go to 4.11, because I run a 29.5'' tyre so engine revs will be 2700 at 100kph other wise it will be off cam and as you said a slug ..........FC427..........
