Title: Ram horn exaust manifolds
Post by: FE350 on December 11, 2007, 07:24:13 PM
Hello, would someone be able to tell me if the chev ram horn exaust manifold fits into fe fc's or do you have to get custom extractors?? any help would be great.

Hi FE350 The HK HT HG type wont fit I tried them over 25years ago in one of my first V8 conversions I did in an FC . These first conversions I use to use a EH steering box and saw a bit off the side and tig weld a plate on the side to get clearance . I have seen manifolds on a HR V8 conversion but they were not the rams horn type there are so many types of different manifolds of different US cars if you go to a engine importer and have a look you may find one to suit . Also early Corvette use to use a Rams Horn Manifold that had a 21/2'' outlet that was a bit different to our holden type if you want to try a set of the Holden type for you self I can loan you a set....... Cheers fc427 ive tried some random 80's corvett ones and had no luck but some oldholden seasoned veterans have told me that ram horns fit..  by the look of them on a picture i have they look like they would hit the sub frame...

I just dragged out a copy of Street Machine from November 05 as I was sure that the FC panel van that features had a set of these manifolds on it....I was wrong. It is worth noting though that he was able to get a set of custom extractors from Rods Racks to fit past the chassis rails. This is using a Chev 283 and I'm not sure if the block size is the same as 350.No doubt someone on the site will knowl (that's of course if you don't already know).BTW,is this car owned by someone on the site?Cheers,Jamie.

Hey FE350,

I reckon it would be difficult to fit OEM style manifolds for any V8 into the engine bay and past the rails.

I have met a guy at various swap meets who is making exhausts for things like Chevs into FEs and reckons they will fit by the rails.  While they look good quality and the workmanship is good and price is right, I'm still yet to see any 2 conversions exactly the same, they may need to be slightly modified to fit nicely.

Best bet would be to buy a bag of bends and make them yourself, that way you know they will fit.  When Jason (fevanv6) told me to go and make my own, I thought yeah sure....  after giving it a try, I reckon it's definitely the way to go.

HTH

Cheers

Ed

I made mine , and mine go through the inner gaurds, its a massive job.I hope youve got plenty of patience. They are very hard to get even and neat because you cant get in a good position to see whats going on while your trying to weld at the same time and then trying to hold the one beside it and line it up with the one you are trying to tack.
