Title: The Project
Post by: Wasim on November 24, 2007, 08:54:52 PM
I purchased this car only the other week, you may have seen it on Ebay?

The car has been in storage since 1984. Does anyone know anything about this car ;D? Someone has has a good play with it, it has a 179 coupled to the standard grey 3 speed and a novel floor shifter (like a truck). It has EH running gear, an elaborate heating system and an unique electric wiper set up. And checkout the International (?) headlights - these front guards will be for sale -  I like the standard looK better.

Rust is minimal, but most panels need attention.

I'm giving myself 18-24 months to get it back on the road????????? I guess you've all heard that before!

looks like you have a full paid for photobucket, try clicking on the link below the picture, then paste it in your post, and click preview and see if a pic comes up.

its your car and totally up to you but i think taking those guards off would destroy some of the cars history, it is known for its guards and has been disgused on here a few times before, otherwise, i dont think you will have much trouble selling them.
any way, looks like you scored well.

I'm with you lose the guards they look like crap. What a waste of time and effort just to spoil the front of the car and any one that would fit those blinker / park lights to our beloved  ......FC427......

Well I love those guards.....but you knew I was going to say that!!
As Leon said, the car has come up before on the forum, including when it was sold on a car classifieds site.
As for replacing the gaurds, that's entirely your choice.
HOWEVER, if you do go down that path, let me know, as I would be interested in the gaurds.
Are the headlight surrounds in good order? Some pics showed what appeared to be damage.
Regards
Alex

Thanks for the pointer on copying and pasting - seems that when you have a PA at work you don't really do this all the time.

The best way to describe the front guards condition is OK - there is no rust (persay) that I can see but they do need to be stripped back and smoothed. The lights surrounds are badly pitted and rough. The way the indicators have been attached is best described as 'agricultural'.

The shed will be getting a concrete floor before Christmas and then into the New Year it's full steam ahead.

I appreciate the comment about the 'cars history' but I've always wanted to do an FC in black, minimal exterior chrome, black and white interior, lowered, white walls, 70's period running gear with some novelties (i.e. floor shifter etc), but with at least front vented discs.

This car is just the right foundation. So I feel a bit guilty to 'change' history but that's the way it goes I guess.

My ideal position would be to swap the guards for standard ones (like condition) and perhaps snare a complete FC grill and indicators as well?

I have more photos, if anyone is interested I can post them.

Great progress, especially for only 6 weeks, keep it up!

To strip off the old paint etc I first used a liberal amount of paint stripper and wrapped the piece in glad wrap and left it for a week. Then I applied some more stripper and just before it dried I hit it with the grinder with a wire wheel attachment. About 90% came off in one pass. To finish it off I applied more stripper to the remaining paint and again with the grinder it was gone.

Over the weekend I had my first go at welding????? Looks ugly but it's stuck real good.

Great work, great progress in such a short time. I really think I need to move back home and build my dream shed so I to can restore my car or by myself a project.

Keep up the good work and keep the photo's flowing.

Had another play this weekend. Welding is getting better, especially when I bought an automatic welding mask?? Gave myself a good dose of welding flash in the left eye last weekend, don't recommend it to anyone. Oh well, my old man always said I'd learn the hard way!!

Got the 2 sill patches welded in and just a fine amount of fibreglass bog (Good Stuff). Next weekend it's the top coat and into primer. Surprised my self when I put the straight on the sill - it's almost prefect!

Ha ha ha, suffer in your jocks  :D  I still flash myself from time to time  >:(  It sure does not get any easier on the eyeball though. Those auto masks sure are fantastic but like anything you can get crappy ones and really good ones.

Welding flash in your eyeballs or not your weld job looks good, thanks for heaps of pictures :)

The guards are hanging up on the shed wall, and you know what, they're growing on me ??? Whislt I haven't completely decided which way I'll go, I'll keep them at this stage.

Finished off the top side of the floor this weekend, just need to apply sound deadening sheets and give it another coat of bitumen paint.

ANZAC long weekend it's the underneath that will get the wire brush treatment, all gaps and joins will be sealed with bitumen putty and then I'll paint the whole lot with bitumen paint (2 coats).

I noticed that my late production Adelaide built car has different interior light switches to most cars I've seen? Is this unusual or am I still learning about these cars?

Hi Wasim,

I have a late Sydney car, it too has the round door light switches in it, not the oval ones. I queried this on the forum not long after i got my FC and was told that these switches were put in during the last month or two of production,

Tell us lots more about this mod, I like the look of the clean area where the wiper motor would normally be.

The cable drive wiper is used on lots of English cars, The best place to find them cheap is on Austin 1800's. They were on Healeys and Minis, Jag's of course and others which escape me at the moment.
Because it is a flexible cable, the motor can be mounted almost anywhere and it is an easy mod to change the length between the wiper arm pivots. Also it is very easy to obtain the opposing wiper motion that you need on FC as well by running one cable under and the other over the pivot point. A lot of hot rods run this type of wiper because the roof mounted wipers leave no room for a motor in the roof cavity.

Thanks Ken appreciate that, when I saw that there would be no motor there I said to myself "bloody brilliant" Definitely  have to go to a wrecker and have a peek a boo at a setup.

Have many others here bothered to go down this route and if so were any major hassles encountered?

Cheers all   M

Here are some pics of what I've been up to. It's been cold, so work in the shed has slowed to a crawl. Was able to do some work at the kitchen table but there was a loud squeal, something about dust etc, I'll be glad when I can get back in the shed - that noise isn't there?

Had a go at restoring the instruments cowl - turned out OK just needs some finishing off. Currently doing the gauge faces in pearl white.

EH front end has been completely cleaned and painted. Has changeover knuckles, Pedders gas rider shockers and springs which are an inch and half lower than standard. Should be back in the car once the weather clears up and I can spray some paint. Picked up a fully recoed EH steering box and column and 5 13 x 7 steel rims with tyres. Currently looking for a pair of standard front guards and a good complete front FC grill, so if you can help it would be appreciated.
