Title: why shouldn't i use a front rack????
Post by: FE350 on November 06, 2007, 09:29:54 PM
Hi guys i've been told by so many old holden guru's that if i use a front rack conversion my car will handle like shit and have major bump steer issues!!
but having a 350 chev with a HQ sump and obviously the starter on the right it's a pain in the arse to change everything to run a rear rack.
I've seen heaps of front rack conversions done so they must work ok, can anyone point out the pro's and con's in the rack position department??

I use a front rack and there is NO bump steer.

PROS
can set your motor lower down.
easier to run exhaust.
great feel on the highway.

CONS
Poor turning circle.

i wont change mine to a rear mount becuse id need to re-do the sump and lots of other things.  I can also parallel park it in town after some practice, unfortunately i need a larger spot.
3 point turns are brought out to 5.

overall i can live with it.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Ed

oh forgot...

a V8 in the front will always make it handle poorly!

but im guessing you're not chasing corner speed anyways.

I agree, Ed. Of course, you do need to keep a close eye on them, and they need frequent adjustment...

The lock is a real bad it does make the car a pain when it comes time to go anywhere that is not straight pull in to a shopping center car park and get ready for some fancy steering work and a bit or reversing you will give up on U turns before long and drive around the block instead FC427
