Title: HEAD BOLTS Post by: smithy on January 21, 2007, 10:16:29 PM hi all, what would cause this?
went to bolt up my head last night - 12 port on to 186 block- starting first tourqe round and got to # 5 bolt then it stripped. the second and third thread on the bolt flattened. tried a second bolt but that just spun and wouldnt lock. i cleaned all the bolts very well before hand and ran them several times through the block before putting the head on. on inspection the thread looks ok in the block, took the head back off, bolts wind into # 5 smooth and easy. would i have to re-tap the block? are 186 and 202 head bolts different lengths? did i just stuff up :-/ :-[ any help, please dean Title: Re: HEAD BOLTS Post by: smithy on January 22, 2007, 09:41:57 PM relax everyone,

Title: Re: HEAD BOLTS Post by: Ed on January 22, 2007, 10:23:27 PM dont know...
can it hurt to try? Title: Re: HEAD BOLTS Post by: suziecreamcheese on January 22, 2007, 11:28:54 PM suppose not used them in alloy crank cases but never for a headbolt
Title: Re: HEAD BOLTS Post by: smithy on January 22, 2007, 11:36:58 PM this seems to be the way to do it.
just got off the ph with a mobile thread repair guy, he and others are quite sure that a helicoil will do the job. and looks like i can get out of it for under $60. so despite the initial swearing and panic attack its not going to be too bad, just another couple of days waiting. will see how we go. :-/ dean |
