It took almost 24 hours, but I was waiting for that reply!  Geez, Pedro, I think you may be in fathomless excrement for suggesting that a grey wouldn't be up to the job...

So, Pedro - getting back to you comment about being concerned about a grey making it from Hervey Bay to Orange!  You big wuss!

Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy, My previous long distance trips with greys haven't exactly filled me with confidence, drove from geelong back to the gold coast in an FC sedan, car just got more and more gutless the further i went by the time i got there it would hardly even rev, didn't blow smoke or rattle it just wouldn't rev tried everything and couldn't figure out what it was so i sold it, drove an FC wagon from G/Coast to Murry bridge, gearbox started making a noise after a few hundred k's, by the time i got to the SA border I had to hold the gear lever(floor shift) in place with an ocky strap and could only get second and reverse, it was a long trip in second gear, I've also put a conrod through the block a couple of times not to mention plenty of breakdowns over the years so as i said I'm not exactly oozing with confidence in them.
And no it wasn't because they were FC's and not FE's Grin Grin Grin

Hi Pedro

While I'm happy to defend grey motors I'm also the first to admit that the one in the van has been recycled by Sims! Maybe Ed can buy it back as a bike!  Cheesy

After reading your past experiences I think you really have to go with your gut feel........ either that or change your mechanic!  Tongue

And are you sure it wasn't to do with it them being FC's?  Tongue

Pedro
I think Kathi has cover what I was going to say.

I have had some minor issue with my grey but nothing that stopped me from making the trips to and from the nationals.

My suggestion is to know your motor (engine).
On my first big trip (Jindabyne I had only owned Ivy (my car) for about a month all seemed well, she drove OK and sounded good so I thought. On my way home I dropped a valve and lost a cylinder. Not much you can do about that so I drove home on five. Lucky for me I was going to convert the old girl to run on unleaded any way.
I moved to Perth shortly after getting the car back from the engine shop, found a local mechanic who loves the old cars, as soon as he heard my car he knew something was not quite right. Diagnosis distributor was worn and required reconditioning, Runs sweat as now.

I would advise any one rebuilding a car to rebuild the engine even if its just to strip it down and check and/or replace:
Gaskets
Seals
Welsh Plugs
Water pump
Harmonic balancer (Originals are two piece with rubber a gasket that goes tick, tick when perished)
Timing Gear, and so on.

Its the simple things that let you down, maybe if I had taken my car to a good mechanic he may have diagnosed the worn dizzy before I drove it all the way to Jindabyne.

Cheers Jim

The only problem with that Jim is I'm my own mechanic, most of the cars i've had problems with have been in sound condition when i set out on my journeys, but have died on the way, maybe i should keep a lighter foot on the velocitater Wink Cheesy Cheesy

Had to give up on the fuel tank surround for now the doner peice had too much rust, am getting a new section pressed up, feeling quite pleased with this mornings effort though, thought i was going to have to cut this section out but managed to massage it back into shape.
