Title: Gear Box Oil Seal
Post by: Rod on September 24, 2002, 04:31:41 AM
I have a leaking rear extention housing oil seal which I am sure many of you have or currently experiencing. I am annoyed as its only a few months old.

With the advent of the new oil seals the thickness of many seals has been reduced compared to the older ones with metal casing. When I put the last oil seal in I was tempted to put two in back to back as there seemed enough space for both.

Has anyone attemped this and / or is it possible? I am considering it to stop the leak once and for all.

 ;)Hi Rod
The thickness of the seal shouldn't matter. If the seal was installed correctly it should last more than a few months. A couple of things to check are Tailshaft yoke for wear or grooves from the seal.(You can get a speedy sleeve to fit over the worn shaft if this is the problem). Also check that the oil is not leaking out of the welsh plug in the tailshaft yoke If it is you can seal it by cleaning the area and aralditing around the welsh plug.
Hope this helps
