1  General / FE-FC Holden Nationals / Re: Driving from Sydney to Surfers on: October 03, 2015, 05:37:43 PM
If I was catching a plane from WA to Sydney.
From Sydney Airport, train to Central Railway, change trains for a train to Chester Hill or Villawood if you are picking up your ride that day.
Taxi to Rydges Bass Hill (874 Hume H/Way)
Get onto Henry Lawson Drive heading south and turn right onto the M5, take them M7 off ramp continue onto the M2, turn left onto Pennant Hills Road then right onto M1 near Wahroonga.
The M5, M7 & M2 skirt around the outside of Sydney. The M7 & M2 become a bit of a carpark after about 7 am during the week.
There are tolls which you will have to pay over the phone, the number is sign posted of the toll ways.
The tolls are a bit further in miles but a lot quicker in time and becomes a very easy drive.
Hope this helps. Bob

If my memory serves me well, I remember reading a Street Machine article about Peter Fitzpatrick's first build was on a HQ Chassis to get around ACT rego laws.
3  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Diff/Brake Problems on: October 28, 2014, 12:17:41 PM
I had a similiar problem. The rear wheel bearing was worn causing the brake drum to come into contact with the brake shoes.

5  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: jag rear ends???? on: May 18, 2011, 08:49:36 PM
I did a google search "How to install a jag rear end".
There are lots of sites that gave good information. If you are looking to get the vehicle registered it would be a good idea to review http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/Street_COP_sec_5.pdf
The following site has some informative photos http://www.customrodder.com/tech/...rear...installation/index.html
Hope this helps Bob
6  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Crossply Tyres - What pressure? on: February 24, 2011, 03:24:47 PM
Hi Craig
According to the "Shop Manual" pressure should be 22 psi front and rear for all models. Pressures should be set when the tyres are cold and should be checked once a week. The same applies for tube & tubeless.

8  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: fc wagon tailgats skin on: August 06, 2010, 04:21:04 PM
The differences between the Ute and wagon tail gate skins are the wagon skin has a hole for the handle and the major difference is at the top of the tail gate where it meets the rear window.
The Ute skin comes in towards the front of the vehicle a lot further than the wagon.
You could always use the bottom half of the skin that Craig makes or modify the skin to suit it would depend on whether you are doing a rust repair (usually at the bottom) or panel damage.

9  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Tailshaft to diff connection on: July 28, 2010, 01:45:28 PM
Prior to the use of "U" bolts the tail shaft was held in place by Caps. The caps were held in place by 4 bolts which were removed on the Diff side of the Universal Flange. There were also soft metal plates with tabs, the tabs were tapped up against the bolt heads so that they did not become loose.
Wrap thin wire around the caps so that they do not fall off the universal joints when removing the tail shaft from the vehicle.
Refitting is the reverse of the above, ensure the gearbox is in neutral to allow aligning of the Caps into their correct position Universal Flange.

11  General / General Board / Re: 50s and 60s Motoring Books on: July 08, 2010, 11:17:28 AM
The Life and Work of Sir Harry Ricardo is a very interesting read about Sir Harry.
Harry Ricardo is considered to be one of the leaders in developing the internal combustion engine and the diesel engine.
I had never heard of him until a couple of years ago. There is another book written by Harry Ricardo "The High Speed Internal Combustion Engine" which I have just ordered from the UK.
Harry was delving into Superchargers, Turbochargers, combustion chamber design and high octane fuels well before WWII and continued until the seventies.
I did a "Google" search and there was almost 3 million references to Harry.

13  General / General Board / TAFE - Panel Beating on: January 27, 2010, 11:48:28 AM
Ultimo TAFE in Sydney is running a course in Selected Studies - Panel Beating.
Enrolments are at Building "N" in Jones Street Ultimo.
Cost is $438 for 34 weeks.
The course covers
Welding - Oxy, Mig, Tig & Spot Welding
Metal Forming - includes hot and cold shrinks as well as measuring, cutting, rolling & wheeling.
Repairs to - Stretched metal, split metal & make and install rust repair sections & File Finishing.
Filler methods - Lead loading & the correct use of plastic fillers.
Equipment used - Guillotine, English wheel, rollers, shrink/expand m/c, swagers and welding equip.

I did the course last year and found it very interesting. There is not a lot of technical time most of it is "Hands On".

14  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: VL doors on: July 01, 2009, 12:41:49 PM
I was at the panel beaters when they removed the rear door from my VR commodore. They used a special tool. It consisted of a long flexible cable that was threaded at one end, this was fed through the hole in the pin then another piece was screwed on. The other end had a handle and a slide, the flexible cable was then pulled tight and at a slight angle away from the body. The slide was then pushed towards the handle, the impact caused the pin to move out of the hinge. It works the same as a slide hammer except that the shaft is flexible and relatively light duty.

15  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: HR steering gear ??? on: March 01, 2009, 01:41:31 PM
The connecting rod off the HR steering sits about 8 inches away from the back of the cross member with the wheels pointed straight ahead. I believe the steering from the earlier holdens sits in closer to the cross member. This necessitates the use of the EH sump on Red motors into early holdens as the lowest part of the sump, where the oil pick occurs, is at the back of the motor. On the HR the pick up is more towards the middle of the motor.
Hope this helps Bob
16  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: MIG Tips on: February 19, 2009, 10:24:13 AM
I also started a course yesterday at Ultimo Tech in Sydney. It covers Mig & Oxy welding, hand and machine forming repair sections. Last night we used a guillotine, rollers and English Wheel to form a bonnet section. Also began with a flat section of mild steel which will be formed into a dome shape.

The course fees are $428 for a 34 week course, 4 hours per night 5.30 to 9.30. You also get a lot of "hands on" experience. The teacher also mentioned that we would be shown how to form section with the bare minimum of tools eg hammer and dolly.

We haven't done any welding yet but that will come.
Hope this helps. Bob

18  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Exhaust sizes - what works? on: June 27, 2008, 09:47:21 AM
I used to run a 179 with Genie Extractors, 24" Lukey muffler placed well forward, close to the extractors, and a 2.5" system all the way to the back. It sounded really sweet and distinctive. Then I tried a twin system using hot dogs with no balance pipe. This was loud and barky but I wouldn't say it sounded any good. I will be using the lukey on my FC ute which has a 186. Regards Bob
19  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Petrol mix on: October 09, 2007, 02:12:45 PM
Paul. There was an additive available from Millers Oil in the UK called VSP Plus it is a manganese based additive which offers valve seat protection and an octane boost. See http://www.millersoil.co.uk. I'm pretty sure they have stockist in Ireland. Also there is a Tetraethyl Lead additive available from a company called Tetra Boost. This also gives valve seat protection and an octane boost. Not sure of the web address. regards Bob
20  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: shortened steering column on: July 26, 2007, 03:33:44 PM
Hi Weddo
I used a column out of a FB/EK manual. The column was short by a few inches and didn't require any machining. The wiring for the horn and blinkers was almost the same. I would not be hard to measure.
