Title: Honey pots
Post by: FCRB26 on May 04, 2014, 03:25:42 PM
Just a quick one i noticed the other day when i was working waynes FC his honey pot was very short on his column.
So after a bit of digging my FE and FC ute have short honey pots
And my panel van and 59 sedan have longer honey pots was there a story behind this ?
First time i have noticed as i assumed waynes was off a ek or a different model.

Pete

I think it all started when Winnie the pooh was working at Holden, he started to blow out so they had to make smaller honey pots.
This story may or may not have any factual truth.

Many years ago I put an EK column in my van [before I installed my rear rack] and at the time was running the crash box and linkages [now run a 5 speed borg warner] . Because I still needed the gear selector and the EK gearstick was very close to the FE FC steering wheel, I modified the selector tube end of a FC stick to fit the EK tube and used the FE FC coffee pot . Yes I've tried some ridiculous combinations over many years .  Haydn

I knew there was a difference between FE/C & FB/EK but not between FE FC, is it possible that an FB or EK unit was fitted at some stage as they are longer?

My car was a 1 owner car its  a late 59 i chopped the gear slector off it and welded it up. its the longer version.
Anything  is possible over the yrs it could have been changed.
But Craig (whitefc) has the same late 59 with a long pot as well and he tells me its the original one as well ?

I have about 8 columns floating around ill have a better look.

I have been investigating this for a bit and there are differences between FE and FC honey pots and I have been trying to find out if one is longer than the other. Early FE had a nylon bush where the honey pot rubs around the column. This was deleted during the run but it does not seem to have changed the length of the honey pot itself.
FB EK was longer but it had a completely different shift lever so it would be easy to check if the car had an FB or EK honey pot (unless you had cut it off)
I would suggest check Craig's again to see if it has an FC shift lever or not.

Most guys who have had FC FE FB EK's can see the difference right away. Post a photo. Haydn

Ok so heres the pics
the first photo is ek and this was definitely not what mine was as mine had the original fc rubber on it and I drove it with a 3sp for 4yrs before fitting an rb30 and it was still a very long column with fc shifter.

This one is the one in question and the short one is off my ute?

The long one looks the same as the one in the FB van I have, the blinker switch is a lot bigger than the FC one.

I may be wrong , but I've never seen an original FC FE with a coffee pot like that .It looks a lot like a modified EK,FB but having spent many decades modifying columns I kwow that many makes and models can be used when the selector isn't required because of the standard size of the column outer . One of my friends even used an aluminium lamp shade for a coffee pot when using a strange sized imported sports wheel . I would have to look inside . Haydn

Just measured the two, the FC pot is about 70 mm and the FB one is 100 mm. Haydn, Pete did mention that it had been modified.

Pete the top pic is an early EK Hydra-Matic pot
They later changed it to the same as
The FB EK manual pot with the  PNSLR and pointer on the on the filler piece between the pot and wheel so I'd say that the long one in the other pic is for sure FB EK

Pete

I am pretty sure the pot I have is the original as I have retained the original top bearing even through the many changes I have done.

I know this doesn't help you much.

Cheers
