hi all
ive just got a quote for a fully reconditioned gearbox $950 and then $250 installation
does this sound about right?
the gearbox i have now was "reconditioned " before i bought it 6 months ago and cost $600 but is now making a racket in 1st and 2nd and loosing alot of oil.
does any1 have a recon. box that they are willinng to part with?
if i do get my hands on 1 could i swap the new 1 with the old 1 myself or is it best left to the experts?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers Paul

Wow, $950 sounds steep. Depends on what they plan to do. Just a kit through it would not cost anywhere near that. Fully reco 4spds are about $450, so I can't see why a crash is so dear. I would shop around. You can install it yourself at home without any special tools. A set of car ramps or stands to lift her up and then it's just undoing bolts. Surely someone in the club could help out with some hands on advice. Invest in a manual and read up on the changeover.

Paul - just in case you don't know - any manual gearbox from FE to EJ will fit in your car as they are all basically the same.
To source one, try the trading post and a wanted advert on this forum and the FB/EK forum at
http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/
.
good luck

About 12 months ago an Adelaide transmission mob told me about $250- for the recon kit for the grey box, and about the same to do the work - total $500-
It's not hard to take a gearbox out and fit another one - just don't take the bolts out of the engine mount points!

iI asked a mate who has a few box's lying around (only ej type with removeable bellhousing) he has two no bellhousings for $50 each but i think your after one peice unit are you.,
also he said he remembers a mechanic telling him the gears are the same so can be used to replace worn gears but he's not positive.

I'm with nicko,
He organised a 3 speed crash for me for $40 and its going like a dream.
Without much of an idea I started pulling the old one out about 3 in the arvo and finished the job at 3am! Got covered in grease and had a ball.
Its worth a go!

Thanks for that dave
its funny how it takes you so long to do something the first time and i bet if some1 asked you to do it now youd get it done in a quarter of the time it originally took

Someone up your way must have spare boxes they are willing to sell. Have you asked in the QLD club.
I have about a half dozen here all good for sale at $80 each.
