Hi Frankiej,

The prefix on the engine number will tell you its approximate vintage:

<no letter> 1948 - July 1956
L prefix: July 1956 - December 1959
U prefix: July 1956 - April 1957
B prefix: Jan 1960 - July 1962
J prefix: July 1962 - end

Other letters such as P or M show up occasionally, but they're rare.

If your engine is an "L" block, this page ($2) has even greater detail on manufacture date.

To post pics, there are instructions on this page: http://forum.fefcholden.club/index.php?topic=5613.0

Hope that's helpful.

cheers
RET

The block was cast on March 1, 1955.

Be interesting to see what the crankshaft is like. Hey fellas, is it the b blocks that had thicker walls and a better cast?

J block best casting and least corrosion ( due to belong less old ).  All grey cranks are drop forged.

An FJ block. Im betting its an old race motor. Án oil cooling circuit fed with water from the water pump.

Colin.

I think so too. Many of the grey motor marine sumps I've seen are setup to have the engine on an angle, and the sump top/bottom horizontal. Hard to tell from the photos, but this one looks like it has the engine (and sump) horizontal like a car.

Cheers,
Harv

Are the pistons oversize, what are the rods are they standard and can you have a look at the crankshaft and see if much work done.

Look on the App store for "Tapa Talk" and install that and connect to this forum and its quite easy.  If that dosn't work you can email them to me and I can post there for you.

It all looks pretty standard apart from the sump.

The oil pickup is pretty funky too.

In the first photo of the sump there is a red plate with what looks to be an AN hose fitting - water pump block off?

Cheers,
Harv
