Author Topic: Converting FC floor shift back to the tree  (Read 5643 times)

This part of the restore may be some months away but the bloke who owned my ute from new at some stage lost faith in the "3-on-the-tree" and changed over to a floor shift.  It's still 3 with non-synchro 1 so it looks ike he hasn't done anything "really" dodgy.....hopefully left the original gearbox.  The steering column is still all original.  Does anyone have a contact who can do this sort of retro-conversion?

For that matter, in Sydney or Melbourne can anyone suggest an outfit that does good mechanical work on these old beauties?

Howie,

It sounds like it's just a matter of fitting the shifter back on the column (not hard to get) and the linkages back onto the box from the lower end of the column (also common enough).  It's the original column still?  You can see where the column shift used to go?

As far as mechanical repair work is concerned, I can heartily recommend Dennis Booth, of O.N. Booth and Co, who is in Ashfield (Sydney).  His number is 9798 8521

Yep, the column is original, shifter is still there, still slides around but does nothing so it sounds like just the linkages from the bottom of the column need to be reattached.  When it starts living in Sydney I'll take it to Dennis.  Have you got a recommendation for Melbourne also?

Booths are in Milton Street, opp. Chubb/Wormald.  (Near where Georges River Road ends).

Howie,  one thing you may need to look out for is the reason why the shifter was moved in the first place.  It is possible that the shift tube inside the column is broken - common FC fault and reasonably easy to fix.  But it would be very confusing trying to get your gears to work after putting all the bits back and wondering why it wont work.
