Those who have read my previous messages would knwo that I'm keen on supercharging my 202.....but.....as an alternative to what could be a rather costly excersise, can anyone advise what would be the ideal Carb setup ( Non blown ), for a slightly worked 202 red.

I'm not a fan of Holley's....how about Triple Webers Huh

What do you guys ( and gals ), use in your cars?

It must ( of course ) fit an FC engine bay, and it will be going on a recond 202 Red Motor, with XU1 cam, YT Roller Rockers, Balanced Bottom End, Electronic Ignition, Extractors, 12 port Head, ect ect.....and will be mated to a Shift Kitted Tri-Matic and probably running a 2500 converter !

It must be street driveable, good on the highways but get up and go when I tell it too......It's not a drag car and will never be one !

I've seen triple webers on Rex's FJ years ago...looked sweet, but never read any performance stats.

What would you do ( Money no barrier ), well it is, but compared to $2000 minimum for superchrging ?

I spoke to a guy with a 465 4 barrel holley on a DINGO manifold fitted to a VH commodore with a  "worked" Cam and standard Auto. He said it had the power of a V8 and fuel consumption was slightly less better than a standard VH 6 cyl,but it idled at 900-950RPM in Park.

G'day Mark
Your engine would respond pretty well to triple 2" stromberg cds on an XU-1 manifold. Properly tuned they will return good fuel mileage under normal driving conditions and give you heaps of power under acceleration. The downside is you need to modify the firewall to fit them and move the battery box to the other side of the engine bay or to the boot. Alternately you can use triple downdraft Holden Strombergs on a Redline Manifold. I am using this set-up on my second FC which has similar mods to yours and it requires no alteration to the firewall. They are not quite as good as the XU-1 carbs but for street use should be ok.

Injection is nice!
Why not look out for a cheap VK EFI wreck and pinch the injection set-up? You already have a 12 port head.

or

You could just get the VK EFI Manifold and whack on a gas-research carby and go straight LPG.

or

There is a single weber manifold out there.

or

if you check out this month's Street Machine a guy is running a dual weber set-up.

or

Twin strombergs ala X2.

What's wrong with Holleys anyway?

G'day Mark

My Dad and I had a 350 Holley on the 202 in his XU1 and later swapped it for triples...  whilst the Holley had slightly more power, the triples were noticeably more economical.  I think I prefered the faster Holley though.

However, that was in an LJ and not an FC... and at 16 I didn't have the heart to modify my FC's engine bay to fit the 202 with triples when that option came up.

Mark,

Triples will be better for outright power but most types (Weber/SU) are troublesome to set up right and hard to keep set once you do get them right. Webers are an overkill for your engine specs anyway, and if you get SU's you'll only own them for 6 months before you chuck them in the bin. Holleys are OK but tend to run the centre cylinders rich and the outer ones lean. Not good for an engine with higher than standard compression that revs hard, especially on the lower octane fuels.

Have you thought about chasing up a set of original XU1 carbies? These CD Strombergs are fantastic carbies - easy to set up and tune, and best of all aren't as tempermental as the other types. They also come in two sizes, CD150 off LC XU1, and CD175 off LJ XU1's. They were used with your cam size, and should cost less than about $800.00. If you can get a set with the original linkages and fuel distribution block you've got a great reliable setup that will give you good service.

Attached is a picture of the engine bay in my Torana. 208, Steel Crank, Balanced and Blueprinted Bottom End , Bathurst 6000 Head, 44-74 Waggot Cam, Alloy Flywheel, Mallory Twin Point Dissy, Accel Coil, 8mm Racing Leads, 3 Speed Gearbox with floor mounted Centreshifter, 3.9 CIG Locker FUN FUN FUN!!!!

Picture was taken in about 1982.

That's them, thanks Craig...  I'm pretty sure the CD175's are what Dad fitted to his XU1 after we took off the Holley.  We were put onto the triples by our mate that now owns Brock's '72 Bathurst winning LJ.  Cheers, Tim.

Here's another picture of the CD Stromberg's off a mates Torana. We ended up putting Weber's on this thing and it went like a scalded cat!!!

But every weekend we were stuffing around with it Sad

That's unreal that your mate has got Brock's LJ. Does the 72 car have the 8"/9" alloys? I could have bought a set of these in about 1984 for $600.00 (heaps of money back then) but passed it up. They'd be worth a bloody fortune by now Cry

I'm scratching around for a picture of Brockies LJ but I don't think I have any scanned in yet...  I should remember what size the wheels were coz I only saw it again late last year.  Still looks amazing and goes hard.

It's painful comparing old prices for wheels...  just before I was born, Dad sold the wheels off his E38 Charger to buy Mum her engagement ring.  That's the only benchmark I have now that I'm ring shopping, except those wheels today are worth more than I paid for either of my FC's!!!

It would be cheaper for me now, if back then, Dad had have just sold the spare wheel and not the set  Wink

Oh, and Mark, I do remember that my Dad and I did stuff around with the tuning a fair bit on those triples (probably why I preferred the Holley)  ...  you tend to forget the downsides of things after 10 years has gone by  Smiley

Hi Craig about $5000.00 nowdays for the magnesium sprintmasters, I agree after owning two XU1's the Cd carbs are easy to tune and tend to hold tune fairly well,
rather than move the battery to the otherside you may be able to incorporate a 4 cylinder battery tray and a decent small battery as the XU1's also did to give carby clearance.

Now only 2 problems left.......where to find a good complete set including manifold, and how much firewall masaging to I have to do ?

Mark,

Try the Torana Clubs.

There are some CD150's on Ebay at http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2424302589&category=39382. There are also some Armours Intake manifolds available - these are an aftermarket fitment for the CD or SU carbies. See

You could then purchase some second hand CD's, or even new ones out of the UK as they were factory fitment on Range Rovers and other British makes. I'm not sure the Armours type would be that good in an FC though as the intake runner is quite long.

Other guys might be able to help you a bit more here but I reckon that running more than about a 20/60 cam grind is going to give you issues with the trimatic - unless you fit a fairly significant stall convertor, higher than the one you suggest.

I was over Ziggy's this morning, he is not sure what type of Stromberg's they are though. Had a quick look and it looks mostly complete, I was there for other parts though.

If anyone wants more details or can give me clues to look for to tell what type they are let me know, I am going back Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks fellas....I have now bought them from Ziggy !
Still not sure what size they are until they get here, but Zig sent me quite a few photos from every angle, and yes they seem to be complete, all linkages, fuel sender block, braided lines, filters and what looks like a genuine XU1 Holden Manifold.    
By the time they land on my doorstep, it would have cost me $283, which I think is a great deal !

I've rung a carb restorer in Perth and asked how much to acid clean and restore the Triple Stommies........$340 each !  Holy CR@P !   oh well...I guess by the time I've finished, they'll be like brand new, and still half the price of triple 45 dcoe Webers !
