Pressed panels..

Hi, I live in Melbourne now but grew up in Qld and in the 60s and 70s there were a number of FJ/FE Sedans about with pressed guards and doors. I have been in Melb since early 70s and not seen one here so maybe only in Qld. From memory a bloke up north , maybe Bunderburg
or Gladstone, used to do them. I recall a black FE with it done, the pressed section was painted gold with chrome or stainless steel stripes round it and look great.
I don't recall any FC with it done but could well have been some.
Add even more interest if someone on here has owned one....
One more question, do any Queensland members know what happened to Rock and Roll George and his FJ,?

Hi Dnb,
Rock 'n' Roll George actually drove an FX.  For those who don't know, RnR George became a Brisbane icon during the 60s and 70s and 80s cruising through downtown Brisbane in his FX Holden (apparently originally owned by his mother).  He was a bodgie and usually wore purple slacks and had his hair slicked back.

The car had 'Rock n Roll' on the front number plate (you only had the one rear Q plate in Queensland in the early days- no front plate) and at various times had whitewalls, foxtails, extra mirrors and those fake vents on the side of the bonnet.

It was rumoured that the passenger side door was seized closed, because nobody ever saw him with a passenger.

If he is still kicking, he would be getting on a bit now.  I remember reading somewhere a year or two ago of someone claiming to have seen him then (could be on Oldholden.com).  He got a mention in a book on car culture recently called 'Golden Miles' by Clinton Walker.  I have a clipping from a magazine in 1987 about him.  I remember seeing him still cruising up into the late 1980's, but as I don't live in Brisbane, I can't claim to know of his more recent history.  The cream paintjob was looking pretty sad on the FX then, and George had more grey hair and his crewcut didn't allow much use of hairoil.

I reckon it is Rock & Roll George.

As for the pressed panels, I can remember a few, but I thought a lot of them were actually fibreglass panels.

thanks for posting the photo, brings back some memories...
those were the days of the redcliffe drive in, that brings back some memories too..
you may well be right re the fibreglass panels, the old memory not as good these days.

By "pressed panels" I assume you mean a strip of patterned aluminium running along the side of the car bounded by a stainless trim above and below it. These were Tilli kits and if you do a search you will find some pics. The aluminium inserts are rare on FE and FC vehicles but more common on FB, EK, EJ and EH's

Ken, i know the ones you talking about but these looked like they were actually pressed to get the indentation into the panels. but as mentioned earlier they may have been fiberglass.
from memory they started about half way along the front guard, both doors and not sure how far back they went.
we are talking over 40 years back so recall all details.... aging is a bugger

wow, what a legend, thats how i would have ended up if i didnt get married, i cruised for 3 years around newcastle petty much every night till 2-3am in the FC.

I haven't seen Rock n Roll George for a few years, but I've been told by a few people he is still around, cruising the streets.
My Fj was styled similar to his Fx so a lot of people here in Brisbane thought it was his car I had.

I meant to add that photo is of Rock n Roll George. I've got a side on photo of him somewhere I'll have to find it. I was told years ago he was stood up one night by a widgee he loved, and since has spent the rest of his life cruising the streets of Brissy looking for her. I was told this about 30 years ago.
