I want to loose my over riders for a smoother cleaner look but there is a join and bolts behind.

here I was thinking of cutting the bar and welding it however I wouldnt be able to get it spot on for welding.
If I try this would the mig be apropriate?
has any one taken away the protruding bolts, if so what would be the best way to bolt up the bumpers?

Yep I did this on one of my early cars.  You weld the 3 bars together along with the attaching brackets (do it on a spare subframe so everything lines up)  Then fill all the bolt holes and seams with weld and linish back to smooth.  Any blemishes are then filled with bronze and relinished.   I did mine with oxy but I guess mig will get the same effect, although I think the softer oxy filler rod is easier to linish than the harder mig wire.   Then the whole thing is chromed in one piece.   This was a very common custom trick in the seventies (that's when I did mine Grin)

Thanks ken, that clears things up alot,
Another problem I have is some rust holes in the scuff plates, I want to chrome the scuff plates but havent been able to find a set of rust free scuff plates, They look pretty time consuming to reproduce so I was thinking of repairing them instead, would this be worthwhile as they would probably need to do some tidying up and I dont want the chrome job to end up costing a fortune.

FC cool, i have a mate who wants to sell some mint chromed FC scuff plates, i'll talk to him tomorrow and get back to you,

I have it on good advice that MIG welding is bad if you want to chrome a piece as it leaves tiny pinholes that ruin the chrome.
TIG is recommended, or check with your chromer to make sure.

I chromed my scuff plates recenly, FCCool.  They look great, IMO  Cool, so go for it if you can get a set that will take the chrome.

Some time ago I bought a pair of chromed A Pillar trims (that run up the inside of the windscreen) off Slim.  I reckon they look really good, even if nobody else notices (and it's me I'm trying to please  Grin). Being a bit of a chrome freak (that's why I bought an FC) I reckon touches here and there look great - including the "U" bracket that holds the steering colum below the dashboard.

Hey GOA350, any news on those scuff plates.

I spoke to Blu chrome on saturday, they didnt really know if certain types of welding were better than others but they said the welding has to be dam good wich scares me off doing it, do we have any local welding guru's on the forum in sydney?
First I need to take the bars in to be stripped and linished and then I can cut and weld them, price quoted was $250-$350 per bar without over riders.

I already have the chrome inside the front pillars, I love been surrounded by chrome peices when in the drivers seat, some people say you will have glare problems but I have never noticed it, my dash also is chrome.

Hey Leon,

Welding bumpers would be dead easy Huh

I was planning to just grind off the chrome plate where the welds will penetrate then zap em up with a MIG.

Before the Nats seems unlikely but after that I will do mine, I could help you with yours if u like??
