Hey Burnsy.
I think the descrition is accurate, it's the interpretation that might be a bit off.  
Here's a GM Diesel 6-71 series.

Fitting this "grey motor" into the EK might be a problem.

Here's the beast in question. Description is pretty close, grey coloured, blown diesel.. As Burnsy said, could be a Canadian Grey

You know when I sat there typing that first post I thought sure as eggs there is a grey GM deisel and I am going to end up eating my own shit here and sure enough so it is  

Definitely looks like the stronger reinforced Canadian Block though!
