electronic dizzy on red six

Hi,

After sorting out some carb problems I've just put my commodore electronic dizzy back on my red six.

This time I had a timing light and it indicates that I have to run a lot of advance for a good idle - somewhere like 16 degrees.

I have spoken to another enthusiast who thinks this can be normal behaviour.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this issue.

Running it any less than 10-11 degrees advance makes it run rough and reduces idle dramatically.

I took the mesurement with the vacuum advance disconnected and the motor hot.

 Sounds like the dizzy might be faulty or dizzy might be a tooth out. recheck your settings.

I test drove the car today and it went well - some adjustment will be needed but its very smooth.

In regards to being a tooth out - I've pondered this and wonder if that is actually possibly?

I know you can be 180 degrees out - but if the dizzy was to be able to turn the 360 degrees without hitting the push rod cover I can't see why it would matter what position the dizzy was installed in?

Am I correct in this thinking?  Its just a gear turning another gear?

Its probably running about 14 degrees of advance at the moment with 98 RON fuel.

Dave im running a commy dissy and im running at 6 deg with a  idle of 700 RPM.
Just check that your timing marks are true by doing a top dead center test with number 1 spark plug removed, or a degree wheel on the crank sharft.

yes as Kiwi says because i think there is only two answers 1 either you have installed dizzy one tooth out or 2 your Harmonic balancer has slipped on the bonded rubber ring,this is a very common thing with Holden 6's which is why even 20 years ago a lot of mechanics would tune by ear and would tell you unless the balancer was new especially with high performance motors and old standard balancers that are not designed for hard reving engines.
