Oil Capacity with External Oil Filter?

I have fitted an external oil filter some time ago. I fitted a one way pressure valve at the bottom to stop the oil draining from the filter back into the sump. The purpose of this was to have almost instant oil pressure instead of waiting for the filter to refil when starting the motor. When doing a oil change I would fill the sump to the normal mark and then the filter hence the system would have slightly more oil.

Anyway I am thinking of doing away with the valve as there is a fair bend in the pipe that goes from it to the block. My question is "What do others do with regards to the amount of oil they put in the sump when they have an external filter fitted?" I would suspect you would need to put more in to cover the amount that the filter will take up when the motor is running. Is this assumption right? What do others do?

If you have a full size filter (Z9/Z24/Z30) then allow about ½ a litre for the filter.

The External Filter is an AC one fitted with a Ryco R2080P filter. What I currently do (with the valve fitted) is to fill the sump up to the full marks and then fill the filter canister up with the filter fitted before replacing the lid (about a 1/2 litre as you have suggested). I suppose the reason for the initial question was if I do this and by removing the valve so its original again, the oil would drain back into the sump and this addition amount would put undue pressure on seals / gaskets etc...
