1  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Replacing dash knob surrounds on: June 18, 2023, 07:20:48 AM
Thanks RET. Good idea.
I have a re-production workshop manual so I will have a look through that.
2  Technical Board / General Technical / Replacing dash knob surrounds on: June 17, 2023, 11:35:08 PM
Hi Gurus,
I have a spare set of new dash knob surrounds for my FC. The old surrounds have now got to a point that they are ready to replace.
Before I pull the dash fascia out and start this job, what is the best way to remove each knob assembly and body (ignition, wiper, lights, choke) from the fascia as it looks as though each one is attached differently to the fascia?
Thank you in advance.
3  Technical Board / General Technical / Replacement VH44 brake booster on: September 13, 2018, 09:28:51 PM
Hi all,
I have purchased a replacement VH44 brake booster for my ‘59 FC, however I have found the location of everything (mounting bolts, vacuum connection, etc) is on opposite sides to my existing booster. Is there any way it can be adjusted so it will fit the same as the existing booster? I have attached comparison photos. Thanks in advance.

4  Technical Board / General Technical / Under bonnet lining ideas on: April 20, 2018, 07:37:24 PM
Hi all, Just after I returned from the Nationals in Canberra the under bonnet insulation lining on my FC came apart and I am just left with the ugly foam stuck to the underside of the bonnet. As a result, I figured it is a good time to explore other options for lining the bonnet other than just replacing what was there. Options I am considering include:
* Fitting silver thermal insulated lining
* Fitting an alloy "skin" under bonnet
* No lining and have the FE/FC era Holden shield logo painted professionally on the underside of the bonnet
* Coloured 5D or 6D Carbon fibre lining (no insulation)

I would be interested to hear your thoughts or any other ideas some of you may have used for your cars past or present. Cheers.
Anthony.

9  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Starting tips for grey motor on: July 10, 2017, 02:21:35 PM
No chance of me driving it all the way to Canberra mate. Wayyyy too far from Perth for a car of this quality. Trucking it via covered transport to Sydney then driving it to Canberra from there.

Rob,
I fixed the choke cable with no result. It was all doing my head in so I took it to Perth Carburettor specialists in Perth. I barely made it there. Couldn't get above 70kph and black smoke belching out the back. Bottom line was the reconditioning originally done on the carby was a backyard job and never done properly. The guy there was excellent. Cleaned and re-conditioned the carby (which is from a 186 red motor), new plugs, lighter gauge accelerator spring, disconnected vacuum advance and it drives like new!!! So much more power so I can see to a point why the previous owner went for a bigger carby. Long term plan is to convert to twin strombergs but for the time being, it has a new lease of life!!! Now have to get used to the power and the lighter accelerator...ha ha. Thanks for all your advice.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your response. Photos attached of numbers I think you were asking for: P24082; 1-5/32; 2376050. Hope this helps.

Thanks Rob for the Info. I suspect you are correct that there is air getting in somewhere but from what I can see its not through the fuel line. The previous owner installed a valve saver fluid injection set up whereby the fluid line from the bottle is connected into the vacuum advance line running between Carby and distributor. An air bleed system has also been fitted to prevent air lock so fluid will flow out of the bottle. Interestingly the fluid has stopped being injected out of the bottle since this problem happened so I suspect that could be the problem. I will disconnect the injector tube from the bottle at the Vacuum advance line and seal it off to see if that makes any difference, otherwise will take it to my mechanic. I have attached photos of the fuel pump and valve saver fluid injector & bleed system.

Thanks Fraze,
I suspect there may be an issue with the fuel pump as when driving at high speed (above 60mph) the engine starts to "starve" for fuel, then when I stop after high speed running at lights, etc, the engine stalls at idle speed and needs re-starting.
14  Galleries / Members' FEs and FCs / 1959 FC Special Sedan on: May 27, 2017, 12:19:41 AM
My 1959 FC I purchased fully restored from previous owner in February this year after a long search (I am only the 3rd owner from new). My late Father owned a '58 FC Special from new (Ivory/black - photo below) and have always wanted one after remembering riding in it as a 5 year old before he sold it, so figured I had waited long enough. Was very lucky to get this one in such great condition in Perth. Nothing has been spared and still has the original 1957 Grey in it. Originally it was Ivory/Corsair Tan (sold new in Rockdale, Vic) but previous owner repainted it 7 years ago in current ivory/flame red scheme. I have taken it to car shows and club runs and even picked up a couple of awards since I have had it. Turns heads wherever I take it. Planning on taking it to Canberra for the 60th anniversary nationals next Easter but I won't be driving it over!!! Plan is to transport it by covered transport to Sydney, then pick it up and drive it to Canberra. Look forward to seeing some of you there!!

I have a newer mechanical fuel pump without the glass bowl (see picture).
Fraze, can you please post a picture of your airtex pump and where it is located in relation to the fuel pump? Thanks.

It isn't a daily driver. I Try and give it a run once a week but sometimes once a fortnight. I live in Perth WA.
17  Technical Board / General Technical / Starting tips for grey motor on: May 23, 2017, 01:28:11 PM
Hi all,
I have a 1959 FC with original grey motor, starter motor, carby, etc. Am finding it is taking a long time to get it started from cold. Usually turns over for 1-2 minutes until it starts. Once it does start though no problem. I will use full choke for the first 20 seconds then cut back to half way until it starts. I have tried with full choke until it starts but doesn't make any difference. Any other suggestions or tips/tricks on how to start it faster? I have been weary of pumping the accelerator pedal as I don't want to flood the carby. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dave. Now you know why I am anal about how to get it over to Canberra!!

I'd prefer covered too after a big investment on the paint. I knew a carrier years ago who did Perth/Sydney/Perth he used rail to cross the plane. The savings on running costs were significant at the time & he maintained it also saved the load from a lot of road grit. Lots to consider as you say, including their track record.

Thanks Dave for the info. Yes I saw the Federal Hwy now dual carriageway. The company I am looking at have covered transport options but depends on the cost. I have already approached a couple of others but they wont do covered transport to/from Perth unless they have a minimum number of cars. The next issue is guaranteeing pick up/delivery dates as it's such a narrow window. But will see how we go. At least their depot is in Villawood in Sydney, right next to the Hume Hwy so at least that's convenient. Only reason I am considering as the FC turns 60 next year!! (Mine will be 59). Obviously I have lots to consider between now & then. As far as I know 2 other guys from the FE FC club are heading over but they are driving. They tried to get me to drive over with them but not with a 60 year old original motor and a $15,000 laser cut 2 pack paint job!!!
