42  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Speedo Gear Drives on: June 17, 2005, 11:05:41 AM
Hi Richard,

I was originally going to go with a Tri but ended up with a 'glide.  The speedo cable that I got from CRS (with the 3/4 chassis) for the Tri was certainly no good for the 'glide, and so had to have another one made.  My experience (although memory is fading) was that the driven gears were quite different to suit the different driven head shapes.  I happened to have a couple of driven gears to suit the Tri....I'll chase them up if you like and take a pic or two and send 'em to you.........I'm fairly confident that you need a Tri driven gear but which one for your wheel/diff combo, I'm not sure....

cheers.....Brad
43  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: HR Rear End? on: May 19, 2005, 01:13:07 PM
Hi Tim,

yep, power's on, in fact we never lost it...

even better than that, broadband is a-happening...yay!!

Sarge is talking about "U" bolts on the diff yoke...the connection between the diff and the tailshaft..."U" bolts means later model diff......I was talking about the BIG "U" bolts that hold the axle tube to the shockie mounting plates....the old axles use "U" bolts whereas the HR axle uses the saddle plates as pictured on mine...

I'd be interested to know how the rear slave cyl's are set up...whether they've been reduced in bore or whether you have a pressure proportioning valve in the rear supply line from the booster.....or neither!!

do the rear brakes lock up under harsh braking...or are the shoes too oil soaked to know what "normal" is?

cheers....Brad

46  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: HR Rear End? on: May 19, 2005, 02:22:02 AM
Hi Tim,

I have a HR diff housing in my FC so I'll post some photos of the differences that will show whether you have an original housing or HR housing.

Basically, the HR housing has a "saddle" mount welded to the axle tubes for rear spring mounting as opposed to the U bolt/saddle/shock abs mounting plate set up on original axle housings.

Also, as Craig says, there are backing plate differences....and, if you're running boosted discs on the front and original drums on the back, there should be some pressure compensation device for the rear slave cylinders that should be obvious in the line to the rear otherwise the boosted line pressure will be too high for your 1" rear slave cyl's  (HR disc rear drum slaves are 9/16")....

I'll post some pics tonight....

cheers.....Brad
47  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Bonnet cable snapped on: May 13, 2005, 01:35:06 AM
Hi Mooky,

I found that when I needed to do it (on the way to Jindabyne, about to set out across the Nullarbor) that a 1/4" kink in the otherwise straight implement help to get the right angle to release the catch.  We used a welding rod (very stiff) with a 1/4" kink in it to poke through the gap that RET describes.

I had the luxury of Surferboy's car next to mine with the bonnet open so that we could do a dummy run on his then apply similar angles to mine with the bonnet closed.

hope it works.......Brad
48  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Strait cut timing gear on: April 19, 2005, 03:01:21 AM
Hi,

The benefit of double helical cut is that it neutralises the thrust or sideways force of a single helical cut gear set that Dr Terry mentions above.......by having equal but opposite thrusts from the two sides of the helical cut teeth.

So the tendency to create sideways thrust, particularly for large gear sets like the one in RET's link, is all but eliminated....meaning that the thrust bearing duty/wear is very much reduced or possibly eliminated, depending on what other forces are at play in the design of the gears....

49  General / FE-FC Holden Nationals / Re: THANK YOU on: April 04, 2005, 10:19:21 AM
Hi All,

Many thanks from Brad & Gemma as well for such a great time at the Nats....

We made it home (actually to Bridgetown) on Fri night (1st April).  Having left Jindabyne on Mon just after noon, that made it only 4 1/2 days return trip which, by the time we go from Bridgetown to home on Tues, will total 4120 Km, just a little bit less than the trip over (we have only just got access to a computer today, thanks Trev!)

No travel troubles on the way home except that Wed & Thurs were very hot going across the back of SA and WA, the FC was limited to about 80 - 90 Km/hr to keep engine temp under control, but didn't boil over (but we only ever did 100 Km/hr when not limited, so no real issue).  Used a total of 4 litres of oil in over 8000 Km, averaged about 28 m.p.g. consumption.

When we got to Balladonia (WA) on Thurs night, there was a cool change over the SE of WA and we watched an awesome thunderstorm over Norseman and Esperance (200 - 300 Km away)......the next day we drove through the aftermath.  After Esperance, we went through some of the country that had been "pelted" with rain the day before...lotsa  floodways that had evidence of lotsa water having passed through, some were still 6 - 8 inches deep.  There were also trees down all through the SW of WA (20 or 30).  Quite a contrast to the very hot days crossing the Nullarbor.

Anyway, adventure over, great time had and some "trophies" to share with our club members next meeting...

thanks again.......Brad & Gem

p.s.  See you at Phillip Island!!

p.p.s.  will post some pics of the return trip later this week once we're really home!!

56  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Fuel Gauge on: January 25, 2005, 04:26:37 AM
Graham,

my experience was that after taking the dash carrier out, a perfectly working fuel gauge became very erratic.

I removed the dash carrier again and noticed that the threaded post terminal was not completely tight, good contact I would have thought, but after tightening it with a small shifting spanner, all was fixed....

so lesson is, good connections are imperative for the gauge to work, even if your sender unit is a good one....

cheers....Brad
57  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Trim clips on: January 22, 2005, 04:17:39 AM
Blacky,

I used the ~ shaped "spring-tail" clips from Rare Spares for most of my trim on the green/white FC sedan... worked OK...my experience was that the "fancy" spring steel clips for the ends of the spears (different to the spring-tail clips for the middles of the spears) were harder to come by, but not extinct...something like a country Holden dealer could be the best bet...they're usually too rusted out on wrecks to re-use....

I'll send some pics of what I've got....and if he doesn't need them in a hurry, could get some and bring them up in March on the way to Jindabyne....

cheers....Brad

check with Seb, he said on Sat that he had just got hold of some multiple carby manifolds and y.....he might have what you want, not sure if he's got something planned for them though...or whether they were just for "someday".......
