5521  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Collapsible Steering with Standard/HR Box on: March 16, 2003, 02:19:08 AM
Bolt pattern for HKTG box is different to HD/HR.  HKTG box is difficult to fit as one of the bolts is outside the chassis rail so needs a piece welding into the chassis.
In my experience the HD/HR box needs a slight drill out or file as the mounting holes are just a bit wider or narrower than the FE/FC, but not too dificult to fit.

I send mine to Kev for $5 ea - $80 is ridiculous, you should have accepted the offer.

I saw at least 5 at Ballarat swap for between $10 & $20 each but knocked them back as I thought they were too dear !!!

If people are interested, I can pick them up in future and pass them on.  Huh

Chuck - what state are u in ?
This seems like a dumb rule.

Chuck - have you considered running a 186 instead of 202 ?

This would solve the problem wouldn't it ?

Hi Tony, good luck with the conversion - I have red and Trimatic exactly as you wish to do.
I agree with most of what has been said above, but would like to add the following.
I've just had my car engineered and the following are the rules in Vic.  (may or may not apply in other states - but best check with your engineer BEFORE you spend countless hours on a conversion)
HR steering column is illegal because it is not collapsible - if you upgrade the column it must meet current ADR's
If you are going with Air con and power steer I would recommend a bigger radiator or a Aussie Desert Coolers FC unit suitable for bigger engines.
Trimatic is way different to Powerglide since it has 3 forward speeds instead of 2, and Reverse is in a different position on the quadrant.
This is a major problem for early columns so somewhat limits using an EK or HR auto column.

This is why I did what I did with my car

I used an FC steering box to get around the ADR rule, took out the column and shaft and replaced them with EH items as tyhese are shorter.  Hand built the quadrant and lockout from HR items and customised a Torana N/S switch.

I used a sports wheel as I didn't want to run an EH wheel.

Hope this helps

I've checked my spindles and they are not lower than the wheel rim !!
I think the way to go is with Torana discs to get tie rod end clearance and narrow radials for guard clearance.
I've used stock FC rims but have found late Torana rims have the same offset as FC so this would be the best rim.  HR rims push the wheel out much further than stock, early Torana rims pull the wheel further in than FC.
These early Torana rims may allow bigger rubber to be fitted but I haven't checked tie rod clearance with them yet.

Cat, I've heard of 1 chap who cut the tops and bottoms off lots of tins until he got enough good pieces and then rolled up new bodies, soldered the tops to the bottoms and then had them plated.
I wouldn't go that far because you can find them at swap meets still.  Unfortunately all the ones I have found recently have gone to Kev Woolard in NSW.
You could contact him to see if he will part with a pair.
Otherwise good hunting at the swap meets!

I don't know that it has any specific origins, just shaped for an aerodynamic effect.  A wing would best describe it, but most people refer to it as a bonnet bird.

I saw the story as well, I find the "experts" opinion a bit astray when you consider that the Strongmans car was sold for over $250,000.

5530  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: 4 speed colum on: March 07, 2003, 10:16:11 AM
The only suggestion I have is a few Jap small trucks (TOYOTA?) had 4 speed column shifts which may be able to be adapted.  These also have the collapsible column which is a must for engineering if you change the column from FE/FC.

Ive also got dropped spindles on HR front end with UC discs.  I must say that the drop is significant.  I still have stock springs and if I run any wider tyres than the minimum radials it will hit the guard.
HR discs would have been better because of narrower offset or P76 rotors for the same reason.
Overall I am pretty happy with the end result as ride is still very smooth with full spring travel, but car is very low as well.

5532  General / General Board / Re: dealer id badges on: March 07, 2003, 10:04:05 AM
Most Victorian ones were a transfer that went on the glovebox lid or ash tray front.  Campells motors had a metal badge which just said "CAMPBELLS".
Also Stacks motors in NSW had a nice badge which was screwed to the bootlid.
The transfers were very fancy with lion emblems and fancy lettering and lots of colours.
I remember having an FE wagon from Queens Bridge Motors with a decal on the glovebox lid in top condition. It also had a number plate frame with "QBM" on it.
Which reminds me of Rhodes motors which had a cast aluminium number plate frame with "RHODES" cast into it.
Very neat.

Talking about City Motors in Perth though - I saw an FC with "CITY MOTORS" sprayed on the inside of the bonnet with a big stencil.  Wish I had taken a photo of it.

I'm sure it is.  If you look through the back window you can see the taxi rail !!!!!!!!!

Jon,  It's not real hard to convert FC into FE.  Keep your options open as ID plates for FE ute are easy to get as well.

try bending the arms towards the screen a little to stretch the spring and therefore get more tension on them.  Can't hurt - because if it doesn't work you were going to buy new arms anyway!

No that Michigan prototype is the actual car restored by the Strongmans here in Melbourne,  apparently the story goes like this;
Car sold by GMH to an employee - Arthur Ling Dec 1952
Sold to brother in law Mr W Vickery 2 years later.
Sold to Kelly bros Holden dealership 2 years later
They stored the car until the Strongmans bought it in 1999
I have seen the car close up and the GMH letter holes still exist in the boot and bonnet !!

Anyway I digress.  The 316 car is a 1949 model.  Nowhere near as rare as a 1948 model.  In his book Don Loffler records only 4 known 1948 cars in total.

No 6 owned by GMH, 23,37 and 46.
Probably the car for sale is one of these 3 cars.

I hate to dissapoint you all, but the FX is worth every bit of $100,000 simply because of its birthdate and its original condition.  1948 FX Holdens are extremely rare and sought after by collectors, I don't remember the exact number made but it is only something like a couple of hundred.    This car is probably the best original condition (not restored) 1948 FX in existence and since it is first week in Dec production and the car was released Nov 28, its body number would be very low,  the lower the body number the better.
The thing you don't realise about these early cars is that all the panels and doors are stamped with the chassis number and it is EXTREMELY hard to find a car with all original panels with the chassis number on them.
You have to remember as well that both the number one Holden and the prototype have now been restored thus losing there original tag.

Graham - why did you upgrade to HK wheel cylinders?
I agree that the HR rears would be the best (that is the HR rear sized for disc front)
