Technical Board / General Technical / fuel and spark plug info
on: February 18, 2012, 01:52:36 PM
I have an FE with original 138 grey motor. I'm at a loss at the moment as to the correct fuel I should be using. A carby mechanic of 40 years experience tells me to use something like BP Ultimum, Octane rating 98.2. Club members are telling me, no, and to use a lower rating and correct spark plugs to cope with the unleaded fuel. The plugs in the engine at the moment are NKG and the number on the box they came in is 2911.BP4. Help! Regards, John

Technical Board / General Technical / transmission seals
on: January 08, 2012, 01:50:02 PM
Looking for selector shaft seal for grey motor '57 FE. I believe GMH part numbers are 7400255 and 7403035. Oil is leaking from under dust cover at a rapid pace. GMH workshop manual does give instructions on how to remove the seal, but I've tried all avenues over here to obtain one without any success. Any help would be appreciated as to where I can obtain one.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / tar top battery
on: December 28, 2011, 07:43:54 PM

I am looking for a 12 volt battery, Brand / Make name - that wouldn't look too much out of place in my FE. The orignal was referred to as a 'tar top' I believe. I'm aware of a company Globe Batteries in Padstow NSW that may have them. Has anyone purchased from there, and do they look the part. Any info greatly appreciated. I'm in W.A.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Fuel Pump Washer
on: October 12, 2011, 10:30:57 PM
I'm looking for a substitute washer to use on the fuel pump of my grey-motor FE. The washer fits under the glass bowl, and is then tightened down to make it air-tight. I have the original, but it has gone hard and pitted and will not seal. I've tried neoprene, other rubbers and cork but all fail after a short time. I believe a fuel pump kit does not include this item. Any information and help appreciated. John

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Front Engine Mount Replacement
on: October 07, 2011, 07:10:42 PM

Rear mounts were replaced in 1980 but appear to still be in good condition. The new front one was purchased at Rare Spares and can only be fitted the one way. 1980 is a while ago, but the car has only done minimal mileage since then and the rear ones haven't been contaminated with oil.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Speedo problem
on: August 19, 2011, 05:40:43 PM
I am having problems with the speedo on my FE. It had been idle for some years and when I got it rolling again the speedo made a noise. I sorted that out by greasing the cable as per the GMH manual. Everything was ok for a few weeks then the noise started again and the cable eventually broke. I replaced it with N.O.S. from a club member, but it still makes a noise. Re-greasing made no difference. I have now disconnected it at the gear box. I cut the original broken cable 100mm back from where it is inserted in the speedo head and it seems to spin ok. It also spins ok in the casing when disconnected at both ends. My question is: GMH manual says don't let grease enter head, but would a squirt of WD40 or similar into the head help and has anyone had a similar problem? I might add that I replaced the original crossply tyres with low profile radials which affected the MPH reading. Would this also have had any detrimental effect to the cable, causing it to break. Any feedback would be appreciated. JohnBM

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Original front floor mat
on: August 14, 2011, 01:12:39 PM
I'm looking for an original type front floor mat to suit an FE. I have it on good authority that someone or some supplier or company in the Eastern States (I'm in WA) may reproduce mats for early cars. I've had the car for nearly 40 years and the original mat was a light red colour. Over the years I have managed to find one through GMH albeit a balck one, but it seems to me all you have to do is look at it sideways and it will tear. The original I'm sure was thicker. Can anyone help. Regards, John
