1301  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Info needed - vacuum washers on: November 18, 2010, 12:50:14 PM
OK, so the FE, FC and FB washer pivot arm spacers should all be drilled and tapped, with grub screws in place ready for the owner to go to the NASCO shop and buy windshield washers.

Silly me went to the NASCO shop (or at least it's 2010, expensive equivalent... EvilBay Grin) and bought some pivot arm spacers. When I compare them to the ones I already had, there is a subtle difference (see photos below).
The ones on the left of the photos (with traces of green paint) are thicker, and are drilled/tapped on both inboard and outboard sides (two grub screws for each spacer). The ones on the right of the photos (woth the nozzle installed) are wedge shaped and are only tapped on one side.

Can anyone explain to me the difference between FE, FC and FB windscreen wiper pivot arm spacers, and which ones the below are? Any idea what the nozzle was originally off (I understand from one of RET's old posts that the FE and FC Holdens nozzles (part number 7406027) are sort of a cone-shaped affair, maybe 5/16" across, with a threaded section at one end and a pin-hole in the side of the top.  The top of the 'cone' has a hexagonal head, reminiscient of the screw-on fitting at the end of a capuccino frother on an espresso machine).

Cool  Cool... many thanks Ken.

Still hoping that someone has some washer info (pretty please?).

In the meantime, can someone edjamakate me on some of the FE/FC washer subtleties please?
When I look at the FE Holden NASCO Accessories brochure “Screenclean” unit, the accompanying drawing shows the two washer nozzles mounted on the cowl inboard of the windscreen wiper pivot arms. When I look at the FE/FC foot pump installation instructions, and the FE vacuum pump installation instructions (thanks ACE!), they indicate that the washer nozzles are on the wiper pivot arm spacers (similar to FB).

My guess is that the artwork in the FE Nasco accessories brochure is incorrect, and that both FEs and FCs use the wiper pivot arm spacers. Can someone confirm for me please that this is correct? Does this also mean that all FE/FCs had the wiper pivot arms with grub screws, ready for washers, installed from the factory (just like FBs)?

Would dearly love a scan of the FC Nasco accessories brochure if anyone has one please.

1307  Technical Board / General Technical / Info needed - vacuum washers on: October 28, 2010, 10:50:42 AM
Ladies and Gents,

After my last little foray into Warmaride heaters, I'm keen to do a similar document for the Trico vacuum washers that were a NASCO option. Note that I don't want to go anywhere near vacuum wipers this time... just the washers .

I would propose a similar process to what I did with the Warmarides:
Smiley collate the literature and give some of the background history on the washers,
Smiley give the technical background on how the washers work,
Smiley pull the washers apart, take lots of photos and write up a removal/overhaul/installation process,
Smiley put together some info on where replacement parts can be obtained from, and
Smiley Post it here on the forum for anyone to use as they need to.

The things I have at the moment:
Smiley a set of vacuum washers - bottle, cradle, pump, escutcheons, nozzles and switch,
Smiley an FB sedan to mount them on (sorry guys... maybe if I wash it enough it will turn into an FC),
Smiley an FX-HR Masterparts cattledog, and an FB-only Masterparts cattledog,
Smiley the FB and EK Workshop manuals,
Smiley a great technical writeup from Laurie Scott,
Smiley some contacts for replacement parts, and
Smiley some pictures of a washer installed in an FB sedan.

If you have any of the following, I'd love to get hold of it (post it here, PM it, email it, happy to postage and photocopy fees):
Smiley Scans (or photocopies) of Accelerator magazines where the washers were advertised,
Smiley Scans (or photocopies) of the Installation instructions, (I know these are on the forum, but I can't get access as I am an FB/EK Club member, not an FE/FC Club member),
Smiley Photos of washers and parts, either installed or not (I'm especially curious to see how they were mounted/plumbed if a brake booster was installed), and
Smiley Anecdotes from anyone whos pulled a set apart (wonder if anyone has tried replacing a blown diaphragm... or screwed the dip pipe out of the vacuum canister?).

Finally, if you have a washer pump that is shagged (e.g. blown diaphragm), please let me know as I would love to get hold of one for dissassembly purposes (happy to pay).

Cheers,
Harv.

1309  Technical Board / General Technical / FB/EK Holden NASCO Warmaride heater enthusiasts guide on: October 11, 2010, 11:42:59 AM
Ladies and Gents,

Attached below is my first-pass at an FB/EK Warmaride guide:

https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B47Ngr_OkcgoOWU4NmVjYTgtYWM0OS00Mjc5LWJjZDktMGY5MzdlZTI2MGI5&hl=en
http://www.scribd.com/full/37747089?access_key=key-10mqu75enkejxi2r1r8t

Same file, but two files locations in case one gets screwed up.

I know it's geared towards FB/EK's, but a fair amount of the info is common to FE/FCs, and may help some people out.

As the document says, it aims to provide some information regarding the NASCO Warmaride heaters fitted to FB and EK Holdens. It contains
Grin historical information, such as which heaters were advertised for different model Holdens,
Grin practical information on identification, disassembly and reassembly of FB and EK Warmarides, and
Grin guidance on replacement parts and overhaul techniques.
It contains answers to many of the questions that seem to come up every winter on most of the early Holden forums:
“Where do I connect the heater hoses to?”
“Where can I get demister ducting from?”
“Is anyone making aftermarket demister nozzles?”
“My heater tap is dribbling hot water… can I replace it?”

The information is free for anyone to use as they see fit. I'm no Warmaride guru - if I've got it wrong, please let me know and I'll update the document.

Cheers (and heres hoping your knees are a little warmer),
Harv
1310  General / General Board / Re: 50s and 60s Motoring Books on: July 12, 2010, 01:37:06 PM
More like 60-80s than 50-60's, but a copy of Traction Action (Jon Van Daal) made a good gift for Dad last year. Lots of photos of Castlereagh and Surfers drag strips that brought back memories. Would love to get hold of a copy of "A drag racing pictorial: Castlereagh's fastest summer!" by Mike Harding, but seems to be like rocking-horse poo.
1311  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Warmaride heater tap dissassembly on: June 16, 2010, 09:56:10 AM
Thanks Ken - appreciated.
Some old posts on the FB/EK board show that people have done them in the past, but the "posters" have since gone to ground. Common sense says I should just throw in an aftermarket tap and be done with it, but the hoarder in me can't bear to throw out the original tap.
If you hear some swearing off in the distance, it's only me (in Sydney) trying to get the thing apart  Grin.
1312  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Warmaride heater tap dissassembly on: June 15, 2010, 10:54:58 AM
Bump for the those getting back from the long weekend  Smiley. Sixty views on the FE/FC forum, and thirty views for the same question on the FB/EK forum.... someone must have pulled on of these taps apart before (please? Grin).
1313  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Warmaride heater tap dissassembly on: June 11, 2010, 12:56:04 PM
It's getting cold, and the Warmaride needs to work! Like a lot of people, I have the dreaded "leaky Warmaride tap spindle". Some internet hunting shows that Rare Spares has an overhaul kit for these (they have none in the country... been on backorder for a few months). When I look at the tap though, it doesn't appear to easy to get apart. It looks like:
a) the side copper elbow is silver soldered on,
b) the bottom copper elbow is crimped AND silver soldered on, and
c) the top metal washer that the spindle comes out of is crimped on.
My guess is:
a) that there is no use taking the side elbow off.
b) that I could sweat the bottom elbow off with a gas axe. However, the silver solder will require way to much heat when I reassemble and will cook the new rubber seals. I could put the tap in 2-3" of water to act as a heatsink, but am not likely to get enough heat to do the soldering. Even if I got the bottom elbow off, I'm not sure if there is a brass valve seat under the elbow (or if it will come out to let me replace the rubber seals).
c) the top metal washer is the best bet. I can uncrimp the top brass lip by tapping gently with a round drift, then pull out the steel washer, spindle and valve rubber seals. To get it together I recrimp as best as I can by tapping, then epoxy the edge to get a seal.
Before I spend many hours tapping (and potentially buggering the tap!), can anyone share please how they got the tap apart?
1314  For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Windscreen washer setup on: April 08, 2010, 02:41:00 PM
Looking for parts for my FB please. Apologies it's not an FE/FC  Cry... I have also posted on the FB/EK board, though this board has a much bigger audience (I already owe some of you guys a beer for help in the past). I had forgotten how little fun it is not having windscreen washers in grimey Sydney traffic. I could put a SuperCheap plastic washer unit in, but am hoping to keep the FB a bit more original. Does anyone have an original vacuum or foot operated windscreen washer setup please (prefer vacuum)? Happy if it's not in 100% condition, also happy to consider parts of the complete setup. Note that my wipers are fine - not looking for vacuum wipers.
