21  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Boot Separater Board and Firewall Board on: March 13, 2021, 04:14:13 PM
Thank you again Ken.

Also, would anyone recommend a trimmer? I'd prefer Melbourne south east suburbs if possible but not essential.

TIA

Hi all,

i'm seeking advice as to what others have done to replace or rejuvenate the fibre board that goes at the back of the boot behind the rear seat and the (what looks like to me) heavy cardboard used under the dash on the firewall.

Can these be retreated to get the waxy look and colour back?

Or are there replacements available?

Also, where can you get those metal serrated clips that hold the cardboard to the firewall?

Thanks in advance.

25  Technical Board / General Technical / Steering Column Leak at Tube on: February 13, 2021, 03:08:13 PM
Hi all,

I'd like you opinion on whether i should fix this oil leak.

I fitted a reconditioned steering column/box to my FC some time ago. No motor yet so it's had minimal use.

I saw recently that there was a slight weep of oil where the tube goes into the steering box. I checked the oil level according to the manual and it has 2 1/2 inches of oil measured through the lower cover plate bolt hole. The manual advises a minimum of 1 1/2 inches.

Is it OK for oil to weep at the tube? Or should that be sealed? I assume it will stop leaking once the oil level drops below the tube.

Thanks
26  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Starter Motors - which one? on: February 13, 2021, 02:44:50 PM
Hi all,

I have a couple of starter motors to choose from for my grey motor.

Both are Bosch starters, one is blue with EED 08/12 R37 stamped on it and the other is black with EED 08/12 R27 stamped on it.

I think the blue was on the car when I got a it a long time ago.

Which would be period correct for a late 59 FC?

Thanks

Hi,
Following on from above, can a red motor armature be fitted to a grey motor starter and the grey pinion fitted to the armature to make it work?

And is it an simple job to change the pinion?

Thanks

30  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Steering Column seal at firewall on: November 07, 2019, 06:00:26 PM
Hi all,
I'm about to refit my steering column and I'm looking for a new rectangular seal for where the two split plates screw into the firewall.

Does anyone know if these are available as reproduction? I've checked the Rare Spares website and couldn't find it.

Or what has anyone done to overcome this - has body sealant been successful?

Thanks in advance!

It's not urgent though so sooner is better. I'm currently fitting the bars up before painting.
33  For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Bumper Bar wanted - particularly a good centre section on: July 14, 2019, 11:24:56 AM
Hi all,

I'm after a front or rear bumper bar middle section in good condition. I'll buy the whole bar too.
I live in Melbourne eastern suburbs but not looking to pay freight so local-ish prefered.

Thanks
34  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: front suspension on: July 14, 2019, 11:14:48 AM
Same story here. I bought a front end seal kit a few years ago and fitted them a coupla months ago. When I came out the next morning two had split and one had those little multiple creases in it that looks like perishing.
When I went to Rares I got the story about how I'd left it too long to fit them. I usually get good service at Rares and I was surprised how casually the matter was treated.
I bought and fitted a new set and no problems so far.
35  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Front Bumper Bar - curved or straight? on: July 14, 2019, 11:06:51 AM
Thanks everyone for the replies. Seems my centre section will need some work to get a curve in it. I also compared it to the rear bar and it was similar but a bit flatter. I'll also shop around to see whats available.
Cheers
36  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Front Bumper Bar - curved or straight? on: July 09, 2019, 02:04:07 PM
Hi all,

Is the middle section of the front bumper bar straight or curved to match the curve of the splash panel under the front grill? When you are looking down from above.

I've just fitted my front bumper bar and it's relatively straight. Is this because after 60 years its been massaged/bumped into being straight or is it supposed to be that way instead of having a curve that matches the curve of the splash panel across its width?

Thanks

Thanks guys - much appreciated. It means I can use the one I've got.
38  Technical Board / General Technical / Brake Master Cylinder on: February 13, 2019, 09:06:50 PM
Hi all,

I am trying to put period original master cylinders in my FC but the brake master cylinder I have has a part number I can't find in the master parts book.

The number on the cylinder is 7409631.

Anyone had this before?
39  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Glass Restoration - recommendations? on: August 30, 2018, 01:44:42 PM
Hi all,

I'm looking to get my rear windscreen polished to bring it up to as near new as possible. I'll probably get the side glass done as well as I want to keep the original "toughened" watermark.

I've been recommended a company in Queensland but a google search indicated two, and they seem to be within a few hundred metres of each other - GT Glass and Scratchless Glass, both in Maroochydore.

Does anyone have experience with either or have other recommendations?

Thanks
40  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Notchy rear wheel bearings on: December 16, 2017, 06:30:14 PM
I pulled out both axles this weekend. It's not the wheel bearings as I had thought. They were hard to get out and I needed a slide hammer but that was due to the non hardening gasket sealer I used. Next time I used much less sealer.

To compare I fitted some old axles /bearings and it felt the same - slightly less maybe but too fine to be sure. I refitted the NOS axles / new bearings and they slid into place and out again with little persuasion so I reckon they are OK and not binding in the axle housing.

Turning a fitted wheel by hand you can't detect it. I can only feel it when I turn the axle by hand without the wheel fitted. Also there's no brakes fitted yet so it's not those.

The diff was reconditioned by a reputable firm and it's full of oil so I'm also guessing it's OK.

It's so long since I rotated an FC rear axle by hand that I am thinking this 'notchiness' is a normal feel to the diff - I can't remember what they used to feel like.
