Technical Board / Restoration Help / Rear Axle Oil Seal
|
on: August 07, 2019, 04:59:02 PM
|
Hi everyone. About 3000 miles ago I fitted new seals and bearings to the rear axle of my August 57 FE. Right backing plate is now lightly coated with oil and a leak is evident where axle housing passes through the backing plate. Rang Rares and CBC Bearings and got the same story. FJ and FE models up to chassis # 43428 are one type. FE's after this and all FC are a different seal/part number. Can anyone confirm please? My chassis number is 727981S Cheers, Ken

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Better Auto Rubber

Satch....Have a look at the "Shed Talk" YouTube clips on the Rare Spares website. There are two related to fitting door rubbers to early Holdens (FJ & EK). You'll get some useful tips on fitting techniques and on avoiding common pitfalls. And of course, search this forum for help. As for rubbers, I bought a seal for my boot a few years back at a swap. Not a Rares product, but one of the other well known alternatives. A very poor fit....... too large, rubber too hard. So I have just removed it and have one from Rares ready to go in. Interestingly, the one from Rares is softer, hollow core rather than solid like the one just removed and slightly narrower. So my experience with boot rubbers is that they are not necessarily all the same. Cheers, Ken

Technical Board / General Technical / Heater Hoses

I have an original heater in my FE. Two pipes come through the firewall from the heater...one higher up than the other and they connect via hoses to the water pump and to the thermostat housing. Can anyone advise which hose connects to the pump and which one goes to thermostat? Cheers, Ken

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Bootlid Rubber Seal
|
on: March 09, 2019, 05:54:18 PM
|
Recently I made the mistake of having my original seal replaced by someone that generally knows their stuff. Now admittedly the old seal was past its prime and did leak, but importantly, also allowed perfect alignment. Job done and I now have the lid sitting too high and the boot needs slamming in order to shut. Cannot live with it so I am going to give it a go myself. I have trawled this forum on related posts but they are a few years old. I think I have enough info on fitting so my main question is: are all the boot rubbers available from various vendors from the same factory and hence no difference in fit and profile? Or can anyone recommend one that is a better option? Any advice on this or fitting it would be appreciated. Sorry, I know this issue has been well covered in the past but wondering what the latest thoughts on it are. Cheers, Ken

Hi Peter. I have seen old style aerials advertised on E Bay quite regularly. My FE has the hole drilled in the panel that houses the air cowl. It has always looked fine from my perspective as it was generally the practice back in 1957. Cheers, Ken

For anyone intending to go to the Cessnock Swap this August- I believe it has been called off due to red tape and various oh&s/insurance issues. Shame...it was always a good meet. Cheers, Ken

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Boot Rubber
|

Finally getting around to fitting a new boot lid rubber to the FE. A fairly dumb question ....but which way does the rubber go? Top flap facing inwards as in right hand guard picture or outwards as per the left hand guard?? Judging by the existing well worn original I'm thinking as in the R/H side. Thanks for any advice. Cheers, Ken

Hi Fraze. My FE had cross ply tyres when I first bought it. Handling was not good so I went to the 185 80 R13 steel radials rather quickly. Never regretted it. Definite improvement and still looks original Cheers, Ken
