Thanks guys. I think you're right about the different styles for FE and FC John. I actually prefer the look of the curved ones though. Nice looking car in the photo, by the way! I'll go with RET's recommendation and try Smooth's.
Cheers....Ken.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Venetian Blinds

Hi Everyone
I am thinking of fitting some rear window venetian blinds to my FE sedan. I have located two alternative suppliers: Rare Spares and Autocables. Could anyone advise as to whether they are similar in style and quality? I can get to Rares in Sydney to check out their product but unfortunately Autocables cannot send any pics so it's hard to know what to do. I have read some earlier posts on this subject and it would seem that both are good reproductions. Is this still the case?
Cheers....Ken

For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Re: Assist Grip Straps FE
|
on: December 14, 2006, 06:01:25 AM

Thanks everyone. I'll hold out to see if I can locate a pair of originals or some later model ones as Gary suggested. Unfortunately the previous owner decided that red would look better than blue so I have original Summit Blue and Cosmos Grey trim in reasonably good condition except for bright red grip straps. MMMM! if anyone has any to sell I can be contacted on (02) 4995 9200.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Matching Old Paint
|
on: October 19, 2006, 11:38:17 PM

Thanks fells. Ken you are spot-on about the chalky appearance of the current paint work. I was hoping there might be a few tricks to tone down or dull the newly painted look. Perhaps using a very fine wet & dry or something similar after the paint dries?? I know its never going to match entirely but even to get close would do as the car is unrestored and certainly has some imperfections!!
I will also ring Protec and talk to them too, Alfio - thanks for the contact details.
Best regards..Ken

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Matching Old Paint
|
on: October 19, 2006, 06:51:48 AM

Hi Everyone
I know there have been a few paint questions of late but here goes anyway. I have recently bought a 1957 FE that still has its original paint work. It is definitely looking a bit tired and there is some fading and a few thin spots, particularly on the roof. Colours are Teal Blue (253-7478) over Elk Blue (253-7481). I would like to make the sun visor colour match the roof. Is it folly to even try to match them at this stage or are there a few tricks that may get it looking reasonably close? And would I better to use an acrylic or 2 pack? At the moment the visor is Elk Blue and to me it just does not look right. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Ken.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Rear Springs

Fast Eddie - thanks for the pics. Nothing like a few images to make things clearer. Interesting to see the car too! I wasn't really sure where the inserts were, as mine must be covered in paint and hidden. And Dave thanks for the advice. I think I' ll go with your suggestion and get them retensioned. Anyone you've dealt with that you would recommend?
Cheers....Ken

Thanks everyone. Near enough isn't really good enough in terms of originality. I hadn't realised about the inserts - has anyone had springs redone and is it an effective solution? And are the inserts likely to be in need of replacement or is it a "take them apart and see" proposition?
Cheers...Ken

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Rear Springs

Could anyone advise whether there is a company that manufactures rear springs to original specs and appearance? Or am I better to look at getting the old ones re tensioned? If so, where? Prefer NSW or QLD if possible. Thanks.

Technical Board / General Technical / Workshop Manual for FC?
|
on: April 05, 2005, 04:56:32 AM

Could someone tell me whether the FC had its own complete workshop manual or was there only an FC supplement to the FE manual? I've seen several FE manuals floating around but never an FC. Then again, maybe I'm not too observant. Thanks. Ken

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Oil from the Ignition Coil
|
on: July 21, 2003, 02:32:19 AM
|
Can anyone advise as to whether (and if so, where) I can get an ignition coil reconditioned please. I have an original GMH coil and when the lead was removed recently it appears that a little oil from inside the coil has been running down the lead and into the distributor. Does this mean the coil is on the way out even though the old grey is still able to start and run OK?
Cheers..........Ken K

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Battery Restoration Feed Back
|
on: July 12, 2003, 05:33:34 AM

Some follow up on the battery restoration place in Melbourne. Ariel Batteries in Clifton Hill completed the job in a day and a half. Cost was $100 to fully rebuild an original 6v GMH battery and charge it up. First class job overall. All the cells were replaced and a new top supplied and fitted. If anyone is interested, any battery can be sent via post (minus the acid of course) for around $23 and will be returned by post ready to fill and charge. The proprieter says he does this often and rebuilds for quite a few clubs around the country - looks like he's been in the business for yonks and we found him really helpful and efficient. He's worth a try if you want to preserve a good original battery. The only proviso for restoration is that your battery case must be OK. We also took an Air Chief valve radio back to Nostalgic Wireless, also in Melbourne. It had been beautifully restored by them 6 months before but had developed a reception problem. Apparently a small spider had got into the works and built a home. Peter at Nostalgic W pulled it apart and had it fixed the following day, free of charge. We found him very obliging and would certainly use him again. Ken

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Reconditioning a Battery??
|
on: April 30, 2003, 07:00:23 AM

Thanks for the input everyone. My nephew spoke to Ariel and Pope and both perform this type of service. As he lives in Sydney he will likely go with Pope Batteries (66-68 Tattersalls Rd Blacktown, tel: 9622 3223). He spoke to an older fellow named Bob who said he'd done hundreds of similar refits since setting up shop there in the late 50's. I will post the results.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Reconditioning a Battery??
|
on: April 27, 2003, 11:17:20 PM
|
My nephew is restoring an FJ sedan which still has a genuine GMH battery in it and until last week it had been performing sterling service. According to the fellow he purchased the car from the battery had been pulled apart and reconditioned about 4 years ago. Does this ring true with anyone? And if so is there any business around which still does this? According to my 82 yo father it was a common practice in days gone by to recondition a battery. Also, can anyone advise on a fair price to pay for an FE grille in near perfect condition please?
