Technical Board / Restoration Help / Wind Cord
|
on: December 11, 2007, 03:18:12 PM
|
Could anyone advise whether replacing the wind cord (that surrounds each door) is a relatively straight-forward job please? I still have the original trim and it is quite good for its age except for the wind cord which has lost all its colour. Apart from looking a bit ordinary it is also prone to coming out of its recess - previous owner has "Gel Gripped" it back in places. As I have to have a motor trimmer fit a few new springs into the front seat I may as well get the cord done if it is not too big a job. Also, would Rare's be the best place to acquire replacement cord and if so would anyone know which colour would best suit Summit Blue / Cosmos. And is the repro close to the original in appearance etc??
Cheers....Ken

Thanks. I didn't think there would be any problem with fitting them in all the holes - not to mention the fact that I wasn't looking forward to having to pull everything off again.

Technical Board / General Technical / Door Trim Plastic Caps
|

Hi Everyone - this is a fairly simple question but here goes. I have just re-attached my rear door trims after cleaning and checking for rust. In the workshop manual it states that only seven of the holes need to have the plastic caps which the trim clips go into. I have fitted them into all the holes (because like a lot of people I read the instructions after I've done the job ) I can't see why it would matter to have the caps in all the holes but it's better to be safe than sorry, as these are the original door trims. Was there any special reason for only fitting caps to some of the holes??? Cheers....Ken

Would anyone have a pair of rear panel "Special" script emblems in reasonable condition for an FE please? Chrome and red paint don't have to be brilliant as long as there is no pitting.
Cheers.....Ken

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Door Inner Panel Covers

Thank you all. I have decided to use PVC which I bought at a tarpaulin/canvas business. According to the Sikaflex rep, clean the metal first with metho, rough up the surfaces with emery, then do the PVC and the metal again with Sikaflex 205 cleaner. Next, apply an even bead of Sikaflex 227 and glue together.
For what it's worth, if anyone needs to glue any type of modern plastic sheeting onto metal, apparently the only thing that will adhere decently is a rubber compound called Butyl Mastic. It's made by Selleys.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Door Inner Panel Covers
|

Hi Everyone I've removed my door trims and the access hole covers in order to check for rust in the doors. No rust, but I am having a cow of a time with replacing and adhering the covers. The original covers appear to be made of an aluminium foil backed with a coarse fibre and tar. It was a shame to remove them as they were still in good nick and sealing well but getting them off has basically destroyed them. I have no idea whether this material is still available to buy so I'm trying some plastic sheeting which I bought off the roll from Clark Rubber. But nothing I use will stick the plastic to the door. After an hour or so, the plastic just curls up. According to the Selleys help line, it is because most plastics are made from polypropylene which resists adhesives. Can anyone offer a solution to what should have been a straightforward half-day job? Is there a better material to use than plastic or is there a glue out there that will work? Ideally I'd love to refit the aluminium and tar material that came off if it is still around. Thanks.....Ken

Many thanks Brett - I am in Dungog which is 40k north of Maitland. I get down to Sydney about every 3 weeks so getting to Carramar is no problem. If you could get a sample to them that would be great. Much appreciated!! Can you let me know when you've had a chance to do it and I'll give them a call?
Cheers.......Ken

I'm not sure Glenn - I assume so. I have a front seat that I really sink down into when I sit in it. At the moment I need a cushion under me in order to see over the wheel. I spoke to Danny at "A Stitch in Time" in Sydney and he said it would be easier if I could get some replacement springs although he said he could do it without them if needs be. Maybe I need to give him a call back to check what springs are likely to be gone! Thanks for the links to Daley's and UDA.

Hi Everyone
I'm after a donor seat or some front seat springs to suit an FE. I can pick up the seat if you're anywhere between Maitland and Sydney (or there-abouts).

Thanks for the link John. I was pretty certain of the green being the correct colour but all the ones I've ever seen have had a flat finish not unlike a school chalkboard. I picked up a good visor at the Cessnock swap-meet recently but underneath it is finished in gloss which doesn't look right. As the top has to be resprayed I may as well get the underside done while I'm at it. I'm just wondering if anyone could suggest an actual paint that would have that non-reflective finish and possibly a colour name. If all else fails I will try a few panel shops.
Cheers....Ken

For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / FE Radio Speaker Grille
|
on: August 21, 2007, 05:57:10 PM
|
G'day All I'm after a radio speaker grille for an FE please. Doesn't have to be mint because the car isn't. Good or reasonable condition that will shine up OK and that isn't pitted or scratched will do the job. Unfortunately the previous owner thought that liberal amounts of red enamel paint in the recessed parts of the grille would look good next to the Elk Blue . Impossible to shift without taking the 50 yo chrome with it. Cheers...Ken
