Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Fat Rims
|
on: June 20, 2002, 10:39:36 AM
|
When I took my car to my mechanic to have the engine fitted, I put my old Torana rims on the rear, they are 13x7 with 235 wide rubber on them. I originally bought the rims from Rocca Bros (Auto Parts store) then I had them reset, I think it was by an inch, so that the rims were closer to the body. This combo looked like it wouldn't rub if the guard lips were rolled. I haven't driven it yet though. A shorter diff might help, who knows maybe 245 or 255 may fit. As for the front, the 13x6 with 215s were a definate no-no, althought the front end components haven't been sorted yet. You might want to have a quick word with rego authorities too.

There is another thread that covers the topic of the Volvo Diff. There are a number of ratios available (cheaper as the ratio gets lower) and two brands of diff, the main problem seems to be getting an LSD diff. The diffs seem to be good value for money though.

Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: fuel filler in boot
|
on: June 06, 2002, 10:02:55 AM

Why not shift it behind a hinged number plate ala ford falcon? Although that may be too low to fill from. Is your battery in a battery box that is ventilated to the outside of the car? If you are really keen on getting the fuel filler inside you would need a fully sealed cap with a breather to the outside. I don't about legalities, but from a practical point this would be a minimum. By the way, something was bugging me about the modified version of your car, so I fixed it. lowered a few inches and stretched the front apron(?) and bumper downwards.

1. Go to - http://www.tradingpost.com.au2. Click on SA 3. Then type "fe holden" and press enter or click go. 4. Fall off your chair when you see the price of the FE Sedan in Waikerie. Hopefully someone slipped on the 0 key. Cheers

General / General Board / Re: Lightened Fly Wheel
|

|
From my understanding of lightened flywheels
- allows the engine to rev more freely - releases horsepower that would otherwise be used to spin the flywheel - increases the chances of stalling on take-off, less centrifugal force.
I had it done to my LC/173/Aussie 4 speed a long time ago, and there was a noticable difference in engine perfomance. I never did experience any stalling problems though.
The weight is carved out of the "guts", one big groove through the middle, kinda like those round cake tins but shallower.

Very interesting researching the Volvo Rear Ends.
- The lower the ratio the cheaper and more available they are.
- I can get a 3:54 diff disc to disc for $375 in Adelaide.
- The hard (and expensive) part is getting LSD for the diff.
- Apparently there are 2 types of diffs used on the Volvo, a Borg Warner and a Dana. Maybe the Borg Warner is similar to the Commodore Diff and can use the LSD Parts?

As far as I know, and in SA
Straight Gas - No Emmisions gear required
Petrol or Dual - Emmisions Gear from either the motor or the car, whichever is the latter.

How strong is bloody strong? The motor that is going into my FE broke a banjo open wheeler in 4 weeks of reasonably normal driving, the LSD Banjo fared better, but I was told to at least get a Commondore diff. How much do they go for ?

There is a place here in SA (Minus Paint) that can alkaline dip a whole car body, not sure of the cost though. The only problem is getting paint/deadener/whatever back onto the inner panels and crevices. I suppose this process is best suited to hanging panels and by product of the process is rejuvenated rubbers. I had my Torana shell done a number of years ago and the shell was as clean as a whistle when I got it back!

I haven't been able to find any info on wiper motor options apart from the suggested EK swap. Are there any other "easy-fit" motors?
Secondly, why does my selected picture (blue FE) appear so small? The original is larger than that.

I guess we could all see this sh*t-storm coming from the subject line. The original question was about personal choice and why. Maybe we better get back to that before it's gets nasty.
You can mudsling, name call and quote figures and history all day, but you won't persude anyone to change their personal choice.

How about providing an email address? Anyway it's more interesting if responses are posted for others to read. Here are my cars and reasons ::)Company Car - Ford AU2 Wagon - coz I don't like Commondores (or is that "d" supposed to be a "wh"?) 8)FE Sedan - coz you can't beat that style. ;DLC Torana - a great hoon car and my very first car. '66 Ford Galaxy - big old cruiser, it's like driving around in a nice comfy lounge chair.

You could try Castle Auto Electics in Castlemaine, they do EFI adaptor kits for most modern conversions. There was an SA Bloke who did a RB30 swap into an FC and had it featured in Autospeed ( http://www.autospeed.com), it's a long shot but maybe Autospeed can put you in contact with the bloke.

I also haven't done/had this my self, I have heard the two most common conversions use either a Torana or a Commodore set-up. I have also heard the Commodore set-up has better turning and you can also fit power-steering if you are lazy.
I believe one of the SA FE/C members (Kathy?) has converted to rack and pinion and uses a Torana column.
