Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Windlacing for FE

Ok, I am quite sure this is a silly question, but how do you know how much windlacing you need? I assume it is quite different for a sedan to a wagon (And I am curious to find out both quantities). And where do you find out what the colour specs/numbers for windlacing are for your particular car? Cat

Yep! Let's all raise our glasses and be upstanding for a great bunch of guys with an awesome level of knowledge about all things FE and FC, and who also have the patience with those of us who don't know much at all! Cheers! Cat

Cool! Thanks Ken....although I was hoping to have some great undiscovered colour, but at least I know the storey now. I am, however, concerned about having an entire poo coloured wagon, I mean a flash as on Craig's Poo Mobile is one thing.....but the entire car....well, I'm not convinced! I much prefer the salmon colour it has faded to......Cat

OK, thanks Craig! It is difficult to compare over the computer that's for sure. Although my photo of TC shows it's a lot lighter, I know that may also be fading but on the interior photos it's also lighter and less green.... As you say, let's see what Ken says! What does the 286 refer to? It's not referred to on the website, is it the same as 253 Lacquer Duco? Cat

Thanks Craig, I am hoping Ken may be able to shed some light on this too. I saw the Turquoise on the list...Is it possible that "Torquoise" 286 -7479 is different to my "Turquoise Blue" 253 - 7179? Cat

That's a cool pic - just imagine that perfect world where FE's and FC's rooled... It's a pity we didn't think to have someone up on the straight taking pics when we all raced past! Cat

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Unknown FE Colours
|
on: August 19, 2002, 11:15:56 PM

I've been doing a little investigation into the paint colours for my two 1958 FE's a Special Sedan and Station Sedan, and I've come up with a few problems! So, I'm hoping someone can help.
Sedan first. The numbers are: Trim: 286 - 717 (Persian Turquoise & Parchment Ivory) Paint: 256 - 7698 (Castle Grey) RPO: 253 - 7179
On the original sales receipt it clearly states TC is Turquoise Blue and Castle Grey. I've checked the colours on the FEFC website and the Paint Codes 286 (presumably Turquoise Blue over Castle Grey) and 7179 (presumably the Turquiose Blue) are not listed. This explains why the Turquoise Blue is not available on Craig's car colour code programme. Any ideas?
Secondly, the Station Sedan colours are also perplexing. The numbers are: Trim: 212 (Castle Grey over Corsair Tan) - 732 (Morocco Tan & Egret Ivory) Paint: 253 - 7689
On Sunday I got the colour code from Craig's Poo Mobile and Corsair Tan is 7699. But the number on my car is definitely 89 not 99 and not listed on the website either. This is perplexing when the Paint Code 212 is the right one for Corsair Tan :-/
I have always been told the Old Girl was Corsair Tan since I was a kid, but after seeing the Poo Mobile and compaing colours my car is definitely more of a salmon colour and not as poo-ish.
I know this car was a Directors car, so is it likely that they changed the colour??? If so, does anyone know what colour 7689 is?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Technical Board / General Technical / Spray painter and colour matching
|

Does anyone know a good spray painter who's good at colour matching for FE's and FC's in the sydney area? I want to keep my car as original as possible, but need a few touch ups and minor rust repairs, plus the wheels....and the nationals are just getting too close!
And what's the philosophy on crossplys vs radials when you don't drive the car every day? Does it make a difference if the car's entered as 'original' if it has radials?
Thanks, Cat

Well I think it's time for a girl's opinion! I love FE holdens There, now that's said! I grew up with my grandfather's FE station sedan as our family car. I remember going to kindergarten and school in it, and even going on family outings in it when I was a young teenager. I now own this car, it is still registered with the original rego. It's my dream car and my life ambition since I was a kid has been to restore it. This is pure, sentimental love! I also own an FE special sedan called TC who is a beauty. One owner 71000 miles and in great nic. What a spunk. This is vehicle appreciation coupled with sentimental love! As the everyday car we recently traded from a Subaru Impreza (sorry only an RX!) to an Outback - mmmmm nice car. Wouldn't buy anything today other than a Subaru for value for money, quality, drive and handling, resale value, and just generally that subarau s**ts all over anything else available. This is called recognition of a good quality reliable everyday vehicle - with no love or sentiment! So, having said all that, a REAL car is one with chrome bumpers and a metal dash - irrespective of whether it is a ford, holden, morris, VW, chev etc etc. No new car today can ever match those cars and isn't that why we're all really here in the first place? I think this is just called being born in the wrong era! So the guy who posted the question should really clarify whether he is talking about new cars or REAL cars because they're two completely separate arguments. And just for the record, I remian absolutely and hopelessly in love with my FE holdens.....I really must apologise to my husband one of these days! Cat

Yep, I'd be interested in all of the above Ken (I should have known you'd have these!!). I'm coming down over the next few weeks so I can come and get them then if that's OK. I'll give you a call - what time suits? Actually, I think you are still looking after that door I bought from you last year?!?!?! Pehaps I'd better pick that up too!!! Also, I was speaking to Richard about scuff plates and he relayed your conversation about the guy in Vic who makes them. Can we buy them through him, or do we have to go through Rare Spares? Is it better to get the plated or unplated ones? Slim, I'll give you a call on the weekend to check out the tail gate ones you have. Cheers, Cat
