G'day guys...

Good to see this discussion taking shape.... I must applogise, I've been a bit bust of late, but Alan actually wrote a "follow-up" piece about spark plugs in our March newsletter  Smiley ... not sure if it relates exactly to what you guys are talking about, but I've finally updated our club page and you'll now find that new article there at... http://www.geocities.com/ssehcc/plugs2.html or go to the newsletter page on the site and you'll be able to find it.....

And keep me updated on your discoveries......

Cheers...

I wonder if any of us has actually had to make a "true" decision about which is better... When it all comes down to it, most (if not all) the differences and pretty cosmetic. Strip 'em both down and they would look exactly the same. There are too many other variants that come into it when buying your old girl.... maybe some people were given 'em, or inherited 'em... not often would you get the chance to compare two identical vehicles....

In saying that though, if given the unlikely chance to buy either an FE or FC, that were exactly the same colours, same milage, condition, accessories, in the same area etc, and the same price, I guess I would still lean towards the FC model... no real reason that I can think of, I just love 'em..... 624  General / General Board / Re: FE/FC radios on: May 10, 2002, 09:27:01 AM
Thanks Graham, thanks sounds great..!! I had a quick look at it all over last weekend, and found that I'll need to do a heap of "other" stuff before I'm actually ready to fit the radio, which may take a while and a bit of tinkering..... :-/

It looks like the back of the radio will almost sit against the inside of the firewall it's that big. Which in turn means I'll need to make up a pretty hefty bracket to hold the bugger up. I've also got to either move or remove a set of guages that sit across where the radio is supposed to sit (not sure if they work either. I know when we replaced the motor a couple of years ago, that the guages were never reconected. When my old motor died on "that" Melbourne trip, the guages never showed any warning signs of what was about to happen... which is a worry). On top of that, my fan is screwed to the front of the speaker grille, so that will either have to move or go altogether too to make room for a speaker. Pity, it's pretty good "air conditioning" in summer....

I need to work out which is the best way to go I 'spose... don't want to go getting too "modified".... Grin... If the guages do work, having a temp and oil pressure guage would be good, not that worried about the AMP one though....

Thanks again.....
Les....

Thanks guys...
Thanks for the great pics Alex...!! You must have quite a collection of photos to be able to whip out 3 AWA shots like that...
Mine looks very similar to the second shot (push button and chrome face), but it didn't come with that AWA facia you've shown there that fits under the speaker. Talking to Alex this morning at the Heathcote swap, he suggested making a bracket and sit it under the "lion logo", so thats something I might have to look at.
And, thanks Graham, I probably will need a hand checking to see if it actually works... Also need to chase up some kind of speaker, so it will be a little while yet I guess.... will stay in touch for sure...

Cheers... Les.

Thanks Guys...

As for it working... I don't know yet. I only got it yesterday, and have only just cleaned it up a bit.... Looks pretty good. You can still read the fasica really well. Buttons seem to work, as does the dial. It came with an aerial, but no other wires, so I still need to work out how to check if its working or not, and also if it fits (though it looks like it's about the right size)....

Cheers...

628  General / General Board / Re: Lead Replacement Fuel / Unleaded on: April 23, 2002, 09:49:22 AM
Thanks Dave for the pointer to the SSEHCC website... Wink

I'm from that club, and in our many discussions about leaded (LRP) vs unleaded, a few of the guys recommend running a mixure of the two. Something like every second or third time you fill up, put in a tank of ULP.... and they never seem to have any problems... though I have to say I've not done it myself yet...

Also about a year ago, there was an article in Restored Cars magazine on the topic, which said something about you should only use the one "brand" of LRP... for example if the first one you used was from a BP station, you should only use BP LRP... Anyone who drives around like I do, would know that is a near impossible thing to do, and not practicle ... often you can only fill up where you are... and its something "they" never told us before so its too late anyway....

cheers...

629  General / General Board / FE/FC radios on: April 23, 2002, 09:35:04 AM
G'day everyone..

I was wondering if someone out there has a full list of original style, late 50s, radios that were able to be fitted into an FE or FC... (or maybe we could compile one) I know there are Air-Chief, and Ferris (?) radios... are there any more... like AWA...?

Also, I guess there were different variants, like push button, and dials... just wondering for a bloke like me, looking around at swap meets and the like, what should I be looking for when on the lookout for that ever-so-popular, but hard-to-find accessory – the radio?

I'm asking as I've just found an "AWA Cruisematic 6". It's a 12 volt car radio which I beleive may have come from either an FE of FC, but I didn't really want to go drilling aerial holes in the old girl if this particular radio doesn't go in my FC.....

Any help would be great... thanks!!

G'day guys...

There is another "gold mine" of Holden photos, more than likely very similar, if not some shared ones with the site mentioned above, at http://www.pictureaustralia.org/servlet/pa ... just type in "Holden" under "search" and although some of the pics seem to be under copyright and low resolution, there are plenty there... some seem to be old "family photo ablum" type stuff and therefore also not published anywhere before....

Hey air-chief...

Awesome wreck photos...!!! While it is sad to see such beaut cars rotting away like that :-/, I still love looking at good old wrecking pics...

I was wondering, would you mind if I was to put a couple of 'em in one of my Holden club's newsletters one day... I like to stick a wreck pic in every-now-and-again, and I've not seen FE and FC wreck shots like that before...

Also, I was wondering where were the pics taken....? I may have seen some photos similar to that yard (might even be the same place  Huh ) from Victoria.....?

This one is from Goulburn, NSW...

Hey Alex...

I don't know if you've seen this shot before, or even if it will appeal to your facination of production line pics, but I thought I'd chuck it up here anyway....

It's a close up section (the whole shot is on http://photo.starblvd.net/hewart ) of where they used to press - not sure of its technical name Huh - but the bit under the windsreen that houses the air vent, between the screen and the bonnet.... this shot is of the Woodville plant acording to the caption on the back...

I'll post some more older pics soon..... Cheers....

634  Galleries / Members' FEs and FCs / Re: My old girl... on: February 20, 2002, 09:49:53 AM
Hey air-chief...

No, its a single colour Special.... On the body identification plate under the bonnet there is no other colour number in the "top" space... only the Adobe Beige number next to "paint".... It's tempting sometimes to paint an extra colour in the flash (even like the colour combo of collaride'd 3-tone would look good), but I like it original looking as well....

Ken McLean had a few interesting article about single-colour specials afew years back in his Victorian newsletter... so there are a few of them around.....

Cheers...

G'day all...

Great production line pics Alex...!! Love to know where you got 'em from... A couple of them I have seen before, but most of them were new to me...
I have a couple of old pics, but not many of mine are of production lines.... mine are mainly older general photos of street scenes and similar. I have tried to upload some of them to that StarPhoto thing you guys have suggested, so I hope it works OK here...?!

This shot is one which was used to show how "modern" the FEs were.... as they were the first Holden to have indicators, and the poor old bloke in the 48/FJ still had to use hand signals....
I have a few more shots like this one at http://photo.starblvd.net/hewart if you're interested, and can post some more if you blokes are keen..... Smiley

Cheers.....
636  Galleries / Members' FEs and FCs / My old girl... on: February 19, 2002, 10:44:01 AM
This is a pic of my old FC Sedan... not as fancy to look at as some of the beauties that appear on these pages, but I like her.... Smiley

I bought it from Cronulla nearly 4 years ago and drive her around almost daily. I gave her a quick paint touch-up for the 50th Anniversary in Melboune in '98.... and apart from a busted motor a few years back Embarrassed, this old girl has been great to drive around...

Cheers...

I agree with Alex... I was going to say I loved the FE/FC production line pics you posted. I had only ever seen a few of them before..... where did you get 'em from...??

I have a couple of production line shots, mostly of other models (EJs mainly). I also have access to some other older photos from work, like the one attached here (hopefully)

and would love to see any more that people might have lying around. Can't get enough of the old pics.... and the new ones for that matter... it's great to see them on this site!! keep 'em coming.....

I have more pics if you want 'em.... some better quality than others....

Cheers..

638  General / General Board / Re: FC Vanett on: December 18, 2001, 10:26:59 AM
G'day Rob...

I don't know if there is any way of knowing how many FE/FCs were converted to Vanetts. As I understand it, the conversion to vanett was something was able to be carried out at any number of workshops. A number of different places did them and I believe there were variations of the actual conversion, including the shape and size of the windows inserted. I saw one a few years ago at Loftus (Syd, NSW). The bloke was interested in selling it for $1,500. It needed restoring, and the colour was a non-original brown. Wish I'd bought it..... Good luck with yours......
