There is a good double spread of Graham and Cathy with their FC Holden and newly acquired 1966 Baravan Caravan in the latest Caravan World Magazine that I purchased today.
Cheers, Mal.

I was able to drive the FE to the Speedway Museum yesterday and the hand was ok thanks John and Graham. There was a lot of old and late model speedway cars in all sorts of condition on display. Plenty of old memorabilia including photos trophies and garage equipment etc. Also several classic cars and hot rods on display. My car was the only old Holden there. The twin grey engined Thing is still there. A fine day with plenty of lookers and story telling.

General / General Board / Unusual Engine Problems
|
on: August 21, 2010, 08:43:38 PM
|
I have been doing repairs to a FC wagon including brakes and engine tuning. The engine was running very rough so I decided to do dwell and timing checks before doing any repairs. While using the timing light, the timing mark was showing erratically. I removed the distributor and when turning the shaft it was catching. I dismantled the the dizzy and noticed one of the condenser scews was fouling the governor weights. Evidently when the aftermarket condensor was fitted the spring washers were not fitted. With the washers fitted the scews cleared ok.
While reinstalling the dizzy I noticed the oil pump locating bolt was nearly screwed out of the block (also leaking oil from there). I tried to refit the bolt but the pump had dropped, so the only course of action was to remove the sump I was able to purchase a gasket set locally and the job is now done

I had a motor bored to 3 3/16th in the early 60s and I think the pistons were from the Ford Mercury. The motor is in my shed I maybe could see if it has any id marking on the pistons. The motor still has bridge supports on 2nd and 3rd caps.

On my FE the spring attaches to a small hole in the bottom edge of the dash just to the left of the handbrake bracket. Also when the spring is fitted make sure there is a small amount of clearance between pedal rod and master cylinder piston.

They don't have springs. If the hoses foul tyres or suspension, loosen the pipe to hose connection (slightly) at sub frame and turn hose to allow clearance of tyres (on full lock) and suspension. You may need to temporarily remove the clip to obtain correct adjustment. You won't need to bleed brakes providing you only loosen connection ever so slight. Mal.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Top Speed

I've just reterned from holidays to read this interesting post. I purchased my car new in 1957 and the speedo never passed 80 mph no matter how hard I tried while it had the original motor. Also had it up to 80mph on some of Sydney's main roads that were signposted 30mph. At Lang Lang my car was much faster than 80mph due to minor internal mods and higher diff ratio. Cheers, Mal.

Hi Gary
Remember when I timed the engine recently, I mentioned to you the timing wasn't advancing when the engine was revved. Now we Know why. At the time we had more immediate problems and didn't pursue the advance issue.
Cheers

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Vacuum tank

Hi Paul. I have a Repco PBR trailer brake kit which uses a vacuum tank the same as yours. I used it on a HK that I had for towing my vacuum braked caravan in the 70s.
Cheers. Mal
