Im in the same boat, but 350kms up the road in Cairns.  Good luck in the hunt.  So far no luck this end of the counrty.  I know one went on ebay in June from Townsville for approx $450 but I was on a plane returning to Cairns when the auction ended.  No public wrecking yards operating up here anymore that I know of, for pre 1990 stuff anyway so its a matter of asking everyone and anyone and cross your fingers.  If I spot a second one up here i will let you know.

Great work on the rebuild and keep the photos coming as slowly I ma trying to do a similar thing with a sedan.  Wanted a wagon, but could not find a good sample.  Anyways what is your method to rotisserise (Probably not even a word) the vehicle onto its side.  Is it sheer mexican muscle power, hoist and pully system, or jack?  Looking to flip mine over so start cleaning the undercarage.

Keep the pics coming.  They are a great help for a novice like me.

Hi Sam.

 I have used Car Bra Australia on two occassions.  The First was for my VY SS Commodore Ute.  I went and picked it up from Melbourne, as I was from country Sth Australia.  They took the time and showed me how to fit it properly and were very good to deal with.  The fitment of the bra to the vehicle was spot on.  I was so impressed with tehm I got a bra mamde up for my restored HR Premier.  This time I dealt with them over the phone and again was very happy with the service.  The only thing was I stated I had overriders and tried to explain where they were placed on the front bumper bar and when I got the bra in the post i found I have to move the overriders in towards the centre of the bar for the car bra to fit.  As you would presume where people have these situated on their car various quite a bit so I was not to concerned about having to adjust them when I go on long trips.

On saying this I have heard people say bras do more damage to piantwork than running the risk of the odd stone chip.  I believe if they are clean and free of grit and debris they are a good investment.

Hope this was of some assistance but like I said very professional to deal with and both cars were a good snug and tight fit not allowing a lot of "Slap from the carbra to damage any paintwork.

Hi everyone.

Been searching tonight through past posts about this very topic and have been unable to find the answers I am looking for.  This weekend I plan to remove the standard VS V6 diff from my donaor car and look at fitting it to my fc sedan.  I was hoping someone could pm me with the details of how this was done and preferably with the dimensions used when cutting the axle tubes and housing etc.  I know its a long shot but If someone could reply to this topic or email me at kerrmit@bigpond.com with as much of a step by step procedure possible it would be appreciated.  Just need to get the diff under the car so I can move it and get rid of the donar car from my shed.

  I attended the HD HR Nats on the long weekend, and was admiring your wagon parked over near the admin tent.  In particular the concept of the baby bolts and the baby seats. Congrats on the new addition.  We had a little girl on the 1st of May which is why my wife did not attend this years Nationals and why I was sussing out your seat config.  Any way in the original post there was a pic of a FC sedan in the shed, Green is it possible to send me some pics of this car.  I also have a sedan Olinda Green with a Black Flash, but its in poor condition and would like an idea of the colour combo it is capeable of becoming again.

If I had known you were a member I would have found you out and introduced myself.  Anyhow  Congrats again and a word from someone who is suffering now from our 2 yr old.  get Sleep whenever you can. lol

OK. Plan to attack the fitment of the VS fuel tank into the boot of my FC sedan over the next week or so.  I plan to cut the boot floor out and replace it with a new sheet of 1.9mm and the cut the insert of the fuel tank out so the tank lip sits over the insert.  Then bolt the supports from underneath into place. 

The question is what grade and kind of steel have people used to do this before me.  While ur at it is this how others in the know have done it or is there another way.

Well I've been a member of the site some time now using people's stories and feedback to help get me underway in the progress of my latest project.

I thought it was time I started my own post of the progress (or lack there of), which has been slowly building since I first started my journey in September 2008.

The car was acquired in June 2008, after I was told about it being stored in a shed for the last 28 years untouched.  Not knowing what to expect I ventured off on the 3 1/2 hour journey to look at the car with no real intension to buy. (Well that's what I convinced the minister for war anyhow).  I distinctly remember using the phrase "I'll never build another car again" and "Next time I'll buy one already done".  The FC was dragged out of the barn after all these years as two of the tyres were flat and the brakes and engine had ceased.  A quick glance over proved promising.  The rats had stayed clear and the interior was in remarkable condition.  Very little rust and seemed to take hold (Considering) and apart from missing a couple of chrome strips seemed straight and in good condition.  The car was originally Olinda Green all over and at some point the black was added to the car.

A price was agreed upon and it was now time to go home and face the music.  To my surprise the news was welcomed...........
Was this an attempt at that reverse psychology my father had warned me about many years ago..........
There was a catch.  As I did the hr previously, this car was to be hers and she got to choose the colour etc.  To be fair we discussed this scenario previously but I had forgotten, so I figured she must have as well. 

All the finalised details are a long way off yet as I have to get it stripped completely first. Plans at this stage are a V6 conversion, but leave it looking stock, including interior with a brighter two tone coat.  I should have read the contract fine print though, as I have since found out Lisa has the right to change her mind without notice and as many times as she sees fit.   . On top of that shes been pregnant so theres no way i starting an argument no rational person could win. hehe

Oh well.  I don’t drink, don’t smoke and are not allowed to associate with bad women any more so I need something to keep me busy.


Progress may be slow so dont expect miracles, but as this eventuate Ill keep all up todate.

After getting it home and washing 28 years of dirt and dust away.


The FC with the hood and front guards removed.  Lots of ceased bolts needed to be cut off to get to this stage.  The VS V6 donor car in the background.  One day people will look at this photo and ask "what a shame to cut up an old classic"


Armed with a wire wheel the slow process of the paint removal has begun.


The dash and interior all removed.  Not easy for a 6ft 5inch gut to get behind that dash to remove everything.


Starting to look like a project now.  Hanging panels and interior removed.


The engine for the transplant and maybe the auto tans as well.  See what I can pick up in my travels.


Doors seem to be in quite good condition.  Never can tell though until all the paint is removed.

After a week or so working on the panels with a wire brush, a small amount of rust was found.  Quite please with the outcome.

Hi All.
      Just after some advise.  On my FC project I have got the hood and front guards back to bare metal to reveal not to many hidden nasties from 50 years of use.  I am not in a position to get the rust repaired on them yet so what can I do to stop surface rust developing on them until such a time I am ready to cut the rust. Obvious solution is fish oil but how does this effect the me down the track when it comes to the repair work. Does this create problems down the tarck.  Also the other solution would be a light coat of primer.  Not having done this before what other suggestions do people have or have experienced.  Thanks in advance.

Just wondering if anyone has a photoshop (.pdf) or the likes file I can use to play with colours on a FC Sedan Special Two Tone.  Seen one a while ago for a FC Wagon where the member was tossing up between midnight blue and silver or, black and silver.

Trying to sit down with the "powers that be" to work out what colours she wants this thing to be.

Thanks colin. Job for today. Wife and I are going out to purchase a stripper.  Never thought that would happen although Ive asked many a time. LOL.  About the temp.  Thanks for the heads up but I live in Far north Queensland (Cairns) so lack of temp is rarely a concern unlike ACT.  Im coming your way in June when I bring my car up for the hd/hr nationals so I will find out how cold it can get.  Cheers.

Just wondering what paint strippers people have used to get there panels back to bare metal.

I know theres the option of soda balsting, sand blasting acid dipping etc but like most due to lack of funds on a regular basis the long and tedious process of paint stripper wins out as my best option at the moment.  Just curious as to the success of some brands over others.  Im expecting to paint strip the best part of it off and then sand back with a disc on a grider whats left. 

Also if used stripper what did you put on the ground to catch all the stripper and paint, just tarps or was cardboard etc a better option.

Luckily the paint is still original and no excess panel damage, resulting in excess paint underneath the top coat.  Thanks to all in advance.

Done a quick search but failed to find an answer.

Saw some FC Doors advertised locally.  Been told by seller two rear wagon doors in good nick. Pair of Front doors have rust in lower section byt are straight (Unknown source ie sedan or wagon for fronts).  Are doors between models interchangeable. IE wagon doors fit on a sedan or vise versa front an or rear.

Its OK Everyone.  My wonderful wife found the key in the bottom of the washing machine tonight.  I must have put it in my pocket and it fell out during a cycle. SWEET.  Back to the removal of the dash tomorrow now. YA!!!
